Chilli growing

Postby Beer Hunter » Wed Mar 17, 2010 10:16 pm

My first chilli plants popped their heads up in the propagator today :)
Trying for 8 chilli varieties this year (including Bhut Jolokia :D), 3 varieties of pepper and 3 varieties of tomato.

Anyone else getting ready for greenhouse growing?

Kev.

Perhaps the "Gardening / smallholding general" section is not for you ;)

Missus bought me a chilli starter kit. Only got 4 seedlings so far. Also got some seeds from HenryD on PW, so they're planted and ready to go.

I grow chillies in pots on my window sills. I've got one plant that I've had for 5 years or so now, never grows more than a foot high and has loads of small but fairly hot chillies all the year round.

Impressive display there, Simon...

What happens after they get too big for the seed pot? Do they just get transplanted into a bigger pot? My half dozen seedlings are about the same size at those in your picture. Still look a bit frail, though!

I shall move some on to bigger pots and plant some in warm sunny spots in the garden. I shall probably give a few away as well. Some will become "house plants" as well. The brown pots in the second picture are fibre and can be planted in the garden without removing the plant from the pot. Never tried these before so looking forward to seeing how well they work.

I was always told to transplant them into bigger pots only when the roots are pushing through the existing pots drainage holes.
This makes the plant put more effort into growing a strong plant body rather than more roots with a weak plant.

Gave them a try once and got quite a crop. However they were quite mild, despite the Garden centre saying they were mouth burners, and there's only me that actually likes chillies so ended up giving most away. So in the greenhouse I'll stick to my Sweet 100's as maincrop toms with a few Ailsa Craig or similar for slicing on sarnies. For chillies, I'm bringing back several bottles of Habanero Tabasco from my trip to the States next week, can't beat it on crisps.

I don't grow peppers anymore they really attract whitefly , just tomatoes this year , Money Maker ,Ailsa Craig , and some Tumbling Toms for Hanging baskets . Grew some cherry toms last year they did quite well and also the yellow cherry but I found the skins were quite tough on them .

I've had the same problems with greenfly, but spraying with a decent insecticide gets them.
The trick is using the insecticide correctly - whitefly and greenfly have a very short life cycle of about 3 weeks. So using a chemical method you have to repeat the treatment every 3 or 4 days for at least 3 weeks.

I also use an insecticide smoke bomb after cleaning the greenhouse in the autumn and one again after cleaning in the spring - my job for this weekend :)
