Trim them? KILL them! Leylandii are almost indestructable, cut them down to a stump and they will grow again. They are too vigorous in my opinion to be used for a hedge, unless you are willing to trim them 3 times a year. Getting rid of the waste is a pain too, it takes forever to compost and the compost is of an inferior quality. Cut them to a stump and drill a 1" (25mm) hole in each stump with a spade end bit. Then pour 10ml of neat glyphosate concentrate in each hole and plug with a tapered piece of dowel made from one of the branches. Do some research and plant an alternative hedge that better suits your needs.
