Beachcasting reel: multiplyer or fixed spool?

Wed May 22, 2013 4:12 am

Many moons ago, I used a multiplyer and could not stop a 'bird's-nest' from happening without restricting the cast.

Recently, I have been looking at the Akious range of multiplyer reels and I wonder if the braking systems are as efficient as claimed.

Please can someone give me their opinion and reason for their preferred choice regarding the above-mentioned subject.

Many thanks in advance.

Each to their own

I started beach casting last year and in my neck o the woods it's rough ground so you need strong kit to bulky the cod out .. .... Anything less will just fall to bits
Here also you don't need to cast 200yds. To the fish .... They closer in
I went multiplier for a start & I'm using penn 535
Others prefer the 525 but I don't mind the bigger one,
Yes I had birds nests but not often .... I'm using 80lb braid not mono

Are you fishing seriously rough ground or sand for example ?

Will dictate what quality of reel your going for no matter what type it is

Personal preference I think it comes down to ..... My fishing mentor still uses fixed spool and he into some serious cod over the winter !

personal choice,i had a fair few multiplyers but could never get comfortable with them i spent more time playing with the brakes than fishing
fixed spools are a lot better than they used to be,the best beach reel i had was a penn surfmaster but also use abu's and shimano's
no idea about the Akious, never heard of them :hmm:

I could never get the hang of casting with a multiplier so I used that for boat fishing and a big fixed spool for the beach.
Never caught much though except seaweed and the odd cold!
