Scientific explanation

Postby Keef » Sun Jul 27, 2014 5:29 pm

Can anyone give me a scientific explanation for the following please?

As some background I rarely use my garden which is quite small anyway. As such I do not have a washing line, all washing is dried in the tumble drier. I know it's not very "Green" but as I pay for the electric it's my choice.

However yesterday I put two single quilt covers in said tumble drier together with two pillow cases and a bottom fitted bed sheet. All items were completely separate when put in.

When I removed them there was a ball of cloth and when opened out all of the items were inside one of the quilt covers. Not "just" inside but completely inside, wrapped up in the quilt cover.

What is the explanation for this phenomenon?

Do you know Flintsy you really are becoming a pain in the proverbial  :kill: :kill: :kill: :kill: , you know that Keef is terribly concerned about a situation :worried: of which you have no idea of solving for him  , so , what do you do ? oh yes SBS bring him into the equation   , now enough is enough and I challenge you to a 250 bird clay shoot 8-) , the loser will publicly apologise to the other one in front of as many forum members that can be mustered up  ,also the loser will have to pay all flight costs  and clay expenses plus all meals and hotel fees OK .

Now getting back on track to the thread , The solution to your problem keef is quite easy  , when you put your quilt covers in the drier always turn them inside out first  , that way everything would fall out and not be able to get inside in the first place :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:        8-)

Okay, I accept the challenge however since it was I who was challenged I have the choice of weapons and I select spit balls. You shoot first from there and when the first one hits me you'll win and I'll but the tea.

As for the laundry perhaps it needs something like a Irish washer woman......

Back to the question. Some fabric, actually most fabrics like paper have a smooth side and a rough side. The rough side is always sewn to the interior of the garment. It's more pronounced with heavier fabric such a drapes. The rough side of the fabric would tend to grab more and perhaps with tumbling pull the other materials inward. That what I learn from my college day when I worked in a textile factory making rain coats. I ran a press where I would press a lining into collar part and other parts of rain coats. I had to be cognizant of the finished side of the material. It was one of those job that I try to forget but never can especially the plus sizes in ladies garments.

Isn't it just the tumble drier pixie messing around? Just like the washing machine fairy that takes one of every pair of socks!

The reason, not got a clue
But the fix is easy, fasten the quilt covers before tumbling them, works every time

Neil. :)

This may have been due to a small urine stain (or worse) which failed to come out in the wash.

When the force of gravity from a small urine stain becomes bigger than the outwards pressure caused by its temperature in the tumble drier then the force starts to make the bedding collapse, pulling all other pieces of bedding inwards to this singularity. This point gets smaller and smaller and denser and denser until all of the bedding is squashed into a tiny point.

This is Newton’s Law of Gravitation.

Not all urine spots form black holes, they are often formed by artefacts remaining in underpants which can cause a sock to become so small that it can no longer be seen by the human eye.

If your tumble drier has a window in the door then this is technically referred to as the Event Horizon.

Nah, it the drier ogre's bowling balls. When he's bowling everybody thinks the drier is on the "fritz". :) :) :) :) :)
