Well, there could be a defence to such a situation, in theory. He chased him down the road in order to arrest him, which on information received would be legal. In view of the age difference he picked up the screwdriver with which to defend himself in the course of the arrest, which he, sadly, had to use to defend himself when the burglar resisted the lawful arrest. Worth a go at least.
But,
Given that most reports say the burglar was stabbed with his own screwdriver it stretches probability that the 78 year old managed to remove it from the burglar, let alone chase anyone anywhere. For me, if the burglar reached the pavement outside the house he'll be home free.
If you don't have to give up your car because other people commit crimes in their cars, why should I have to give up my firearms because other people commit crimes with their firearms?
