Waxed Cotton / Waxed Canvas / Tin Cloth

I've just had the pleasure of discovering that the Yanks have their own version of waxed cotton which they call waxed canvas or tin cloth!

There're loads of videos about tin cloth, especialy about tin pants used and loved by loggers.

Isn't it great to know that it's not just a British thing, and wither Dumbago when you want him! :cheese:

Filson makes a nice coat or jacket. In the US heavy duck cloth canvas is typically what is used. It's usually a coarse thick cotton outer shell with a soft wool or flannel lining. I prefer the British version of a wax coat. That cotton outer shell is a thinner tight weave cotton with a nice flannel lining. It's not as stiff as a duck cloth coat and more comfortable to wear. US duck cloth is very durable. If you can imagine a heavier and coarser material than Levi jeans than you've have duck cloth.

Out of curiosity, where does the name "tin cloth" come from?

I have no idea. It's probably a marketing ploy. Everybody commonly calls the material "duck cloth". It's a common material used for duck hunter's outerwear and work wear.

I'm not so sure about your implied association of cotton duck with duck shooting! ;)
