Footwear - Wellies Vs Boots

Postby Airgun_Jon » Tue Mar 14, 2017 5:25 pm

Just interested to find out what footwear people prefer when out in the field/stalking.

My own thoughts...

Wellies
Pros: waterproof, good in deeper puddles, easy to clean, low maintenance.

Cons: can be noisy (slap against ya calf with every step), get stuck in the mud (nothing quite like that moment you take a step forward only to have the earth swallow your wellie leaving you doing gymnastics in the middle of a puddle), not always so comfy

Boots
Pros: more comfy, quieter, stay on your feet, easier to drive in.

Cons: not so good in deeper puddles, pain to clean, require more treatment/proofing

if your wellies come off,it serves you right for buying cheap, ill fitting ones.
same goes for slapping round your calves.

True up to a point in that better quality wellies fit better, but in my experience and having a narrow heal, it doesn't matter how good/expensive the wellies are, the very nature of them being one piece of material with no laces means there is always a degree of movement and play that has to be there so you can physically get your foot in/out, but means the back of my foot moves about. Boots solve this problem with laces.

How do you know i buy cheap anyway?! Or were you the strange bloke always on my shoulder when I was browsing the wellies down the shops the other day :-P

I wear well treated leather boots (well treated = dubbin/Ko-Cho-Line etc etc). Wellies are OK for certain conditions. I tend to wear what I think might be best on the day ............ although I probably get it wrong as often as I get it right. :hmm:

Neoprene wellies for me, snug fitting, lovely and warm, flexible enough to drive in, and as quiet as boots if stalking or sneaking. My Muck Boots (other brands are available) have now lasted me for three years, and are still going, well worth the money  .

Without a 4x4 I have a 500m walk from the car to the range. When it rains the track floods and there is a lot of mud. Wellies for me.

Yeah, made from tire treads for soles and inner tube for straps. There nothing like a good pair of Michelins to lay down a trail. ;) ;)

if you don't need a wellie puller to get them off they don't fit.

Yeah I've started seeing these Neoprene boots, they look like they could be a good option

Two pairs are better, one normal height for winter and very wet weather, one short pair for the rest of the year.
Also if you shoot every day or even two days running two pairs are best unless you like stepping into wet boots.
That said my preferred option is gortex lined leather and fabric boots, mine are now about 4 years old, never been polished and are still waterproof.

Neil.
