.22 springers are, broadly speaking, more forgiving of hold variations than .177 as .22 is more efficient. By contrast, .177 is more forgiving of range as the trajectory is flatter. The HW95 is one of the best sub 12 ft/lb air rifles available. Either calibre is fine for hunting if the shooter is up to it.
If you don't have to give up your car because other people commit crimes in their cars, why should I have to give up my firearms because other people commit crimes with their firearms?

Hi .... welcome to the Forum!

For hunting, the .177 doesn't impart as much energy into the prey as a .22 does, so the shot placement is more critical in order to ensure a clean kill. The last thing any hunter wants is to see the injured prey running away to die in agony somewhere.

The flatter trajectory of the .177 gives it an advantage for target shooting, but the .22 is equally effective - it just needs more work to deliver the pellet in the right place.

Whichever one you decide on, you'll need to become totally familiar with the way it shoots - particularly in a hunting situation. The rifle is likely to be a lot more accurate than you ever will be, so you owe it to yourself to get in as much practice as possible in order to avoid any disappointment. ;)

I've had weirauchs in both 97 and 100 and can't fault them. I use them mainly for hunting, mainly feral pigeons in barns. Whereabouts are you based, I know a fellow dog walker who has a 95 for sale, he's only fired about 20 shots in his back garden and it is still in it's original box with a new scope as well. Get in touch if you are interested.

I am a fan of the 177

Presuming your looking at 12ft-lb

pellets are cheaper, the tin is smaller.

The 177 is a flatter trajectory so range estimation not quite as critical as the 22

My 177 has taken more rabbits than my friends 22 and we shoot together

On paper at 25m the 177 prints smaller groups too.

A study at the ballistics lab carried out by students at the university in Canterbury found that the 177 was more lethal than the 22 because it produced more penetration, if it goes in deeper it hits more organs.

My suggestion is to try both the 177 and 22 and see what works for you

Mike

I've only ever used .22 pellets.
When I started, with a BSA Cadet, all my mates thought the .177 was a bit girly and we were big men using the .22. The wrong way to think I know but I've never ever used a .177. The Cadet Major, Airsporter route then took me to the BSA R10 SE MK2, which I use now, but still in .22 ha ha.

Any projectile is only lethal/successful if it can hit the target.

Range finding is the crucial factor with any gun, but especially with sub12 fpe.

With .22 one has to be more sure of the range finding due to the loopier trajectory. With .177, given the flatter trajectory, one has a less of a problem.

So, in the case of target shooting (i.e. at a fixed distance), one will be able to quickly establish a point of aim. However in the case of hunting (with variable distances) one must be able to a) establish the range, and b) be able to translate that into variable points of aim.

I'm shooting squirrels in the head, over feeders from 25 yards and my .22 BSA R10 is perfect for the job.

I regularly shoot out to 35 yards on pigeons, corvids etc. and rabbits. Are you familiar with the saying: .22 for fur and .177 for feather? Wonder who coined that one?

Has the original poster ever been back ? My friend has just shown me the rifle I mentioned, it is a 97K (not the 95) it has an underlever rather than break barrel. It has scope, case, two pellet pouches and original box and receipts, he only wants £300 to buy some fishing tackle. Can he get in touch with me soon.
