The new offence of possession of a corrosive substance in public without a good or lawful reason will place the onus on the individual caught in possession to explain why they were carrying it, rather than on the police to prove that it was intended for use as a weapon. The Poisons Act will also be reviewed with a view to including sulphuric acid on the list of restricted substances.

So far so good. All very reasonable. But then that's how it starts. There has been acid attacks with dreadful consequences.

The Home Office will consult on legislative proposals to restrict the online sale of knives so they cannot be delivered to a private residential address and must instead be collected at a place where age ID can be checked.

Not reasonable but will sound reasonable to fools. Knives used in crime are mostly cheap rubbish that can be thrown away. If this is legislated then knives will become the currency for older boys to sell to younger boys. It will achieve nothing, but looks like the government is doing something.

Other measures included in the consultation include:

amendments to threatening with a knife or offensive weapon offence to lower the standard of proof for prosecutors

Dangerous ground indeed, lowering the standard of proof. I can't remember any specific offence of threatening anyone with a knife or offensive weapon but laws are pretty well in place for such an event. of course, it could be useful to deal with those irritating householders who will insist on defending themselves if attacked in their own homes.

moving two firearms (.50 calibre and certain rapid firing rifles) from the general licensing arrangements to the stricter provisions of section 5 of the Firearms Act 1968

The usual add on. Of course, gun crime with .50 calibre firearms are rampant in certain areas of the country. Aren't they? And owners of gallery rifles capable of rapid fire are a real problem, for the prone target shooting aperture sighting bondage brigade. All that noise. Where are the crime statistics to support such legislation? In some Whitehall would be dictator's fevered imagination is where.

updating the current legislation on the definition of flick knives

That's a really pressing need right now.

What a load of bollocks. Just an opportunity to screw the nut a little bit further on law abiding citizens and shooters in particular.
If you don't have to give up your car because other people commit crimes in their cars, why should I have to give up my firearms because other people commit crimes with their firearms?

I have written to MP's and the Home Office many times before and I will do it again.

We can assume what they intend to ban but it's pointless writing to MP's now without fully knowing what is proposed. It's a consultation not a bill so there should be ample chance to make representations without going of half-cocked.
