7.62 x 54R calibre allowed in a .308 / 7.62 free slot?

Postby Lancs Lad » Sat Dec 23, 2017 2:29 pm

Will Dorset Firearms Unit allow a 7.62 x 54R calibre rifle to occupy a .308 / 7.62 slot on an FAC?
I'd call them but it being Saturday, I'd be wasting my time.

Thanks

No. It's a distinct and different calibre.
If you don't have to give up your car because other people commit crimes in their cars, why should I have to give up my firearms because other people commit crimes with their firearms?

No it's a totally different calibre.
But can I ask why you'd want to?

Shootist / Buffy;

Thanks for the replies, which is pretty much what I thought.
To explain, I have a Mosin for sale and the prospective buyer indicates that he has an open slot for a .308 / 7.62. I've also sent an email to his Firearms Licensing Unit asking the same question and if they say yes, then all well and good, but I'm not expecting a response any time soon from the Dorset Force what with the time of year etc.
I'm in no hurry to move the rifle anyway.

Cheers

Okay Folks .... update on this particular thread.

I spoke with the Dorset FEO personally regarding this issue and he was happy to accept the Mosin into a free 30 cal slot. His opinion was that a 7.62 diameter bullet is a 30 cal (mosin is 7.62 x 54). I wasn't going to argue with him and have both email and verbal confirmation from him which are recorded.
I was actually surprised at this outcome but the gentleman concerned was satisfied and at the end of the day ... it's his call.

I guess it just goes to show that it's always worth asking the question

An interesting result that highlights many issues. The main issue is that the bullet diameter for a 7.62x54 isn't .30 calibre bit is 7.92mm or .312".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7.62%C3%9754mmR

Yet another example of "Wesayso" policing but one which worked to the benefit of the public for a change. A rare benefit of some firearms licensing officers knowing bugger all about firearms.
If you don't have to give up your car because other people commit crimes in their cars, why should I have to give up my firearms because other people commit crimes with their firearms?

The FEO was knowledgeable regarding the calibre and was well aware that the bullet diameter is .311 (or thereabouts).
However, as he indicated, the calibre is expressed as 7.62 x 54mm which is a .30 cal bullet and clearly, that was good enough for him. If FEO's were to really get into the nuts and bolts of rifle / bullet calibres, then life could get even more difficult for us as end users. Personally, I'm glad that he was prepared to use his common sense and okay the transfer but it's his call at the end of the day.
