Bolt action or semi-automatic?

Postby stucane » Mon Apr 28, 2008 7:06 pm

Evenin' chaps,
just put in for a variation from FAC air to .22 LR - can no longer be bothered messing about with air hoses etc.
Was wanting some advice/opinions/ideas on rimmies - are there any advantages with a semi rather than a bolt?
Have heard that semi's don't like subsonic rounds, as it can stop them from cycling, but do quite like the idea of reasonably rapid fire.
Any advice gratefully recieved.
Cheers

Come along to the Dunfermline Club Stu, and you can have a go at both... Most use Ruger 10/22s, but there are a couple of Bolters.

Bolt Action for me every time as I find it is quieter, especially when using a moderated .22RF as I find the actions on some semis are louder than the actual report.

I managed to drop 5 wabbits in around a minute using my 1450 (bolt action) a week last saturday, I think that would have been difficult with a semi. However, others swear by semis so try both and see what you think 8-)

I fear this may be too late to answer your question before you are committed, but owning and using both... I'd guess I'd have to ask what your intent is with it?

For the exact oposite reasons I love both my Finnfire and 10/22. The Sako is a serious hunting tool, Uber quiet with a Burris laser rangefinder scope and will fire a vareity of loads well.

The Ruger is just a hoot, yes- in the end its probably cost as much as the Sako as I've bought all the upgrades to make it a 1/2 decent gun- However every time it take it out I fire twice as much ammo as I need to and it makes me enjoy shooting.
Oh and you can make a 10/22 very quiet with teh right bits. I too was sold with the "bolt action is quieter' argumnet but in reality the action cycle sound is happening as the bullet is in flight and you dont have to make s seperate clattery click bolt action noise.... Swings and roundabouties...

Nice one Burpster, will be using the gun pretty much for hunting/pest control, though probably a bit of target shooting at the local smallbore club.
Always liked bolt-action for some reason, though did rather fancy a semi.
Interestingly, I do prefer my 12b auto to an over and under or sbs, though that's only because I get an extra shot!

Obviously then teh answer is both....

Ask for two anyway, tell the Auth that one will be kitted out with NV. Most FEOs wont know teh difference between a Laser rangefinder scope and NV.... Mine certainly didnt...
