Took a seagull out with a 308

Postby Keef » Sat Nov 07, 2015 1:24 pm

I saw the heading on another forum and thought "Is that legal?"

Then I read the post:
I couldn't believe it, damn thing popped up and at that distance I wasn't going to miss
a quick drawn breath, bam, a huge explosion of feathers and up in the air it went......

Magic!

I watched the car behind me drive right over it too
Peugeot 308 at 70 mph vs seagull, priceless

Carlsberg don't make Sunday's like that,,, but if they did........

Some things are never what you first thought are they?

Years ago whilst working on the docks at Fleetwood we were being attacked by gulls whilst eating our lunch( butties ) in the sunshine. Some dockworkers were unloading drums of carbide for ICI nearby and one dropped and burst. Some the dockers would wrap a piece of carbide in some bread and throw it away , the gulls would swoop down and scoff it , fly away then explode ! Soon other gulls would fly down and eat the bits , I am , of course , personally disgusted by it all , when they blew , stuff went everywhere.

I remember having a dusty outline of a Woodpigeon on my windscreen for a few days, complete with outspread wings. It was like a ghost, glaring at me like it was my fault. Needless to say, a trip to the car wash soon exorcised it. :)

This was a favourite pastime when I was a kid (8-11 years old..) in the Isle of Man. People still had bicycles with carbide lamps on them in those days and we would buy crystals from the chemist head off up to the cliffs with an old loaf and a pop bottle of water. Crystals kneaded into the bread we'd moistened with water thrown to the gulls.. flap, flap, flap... Boom!!! Must have seen off hundreds of them. Of course I was young and it was great fun getting rid of the hated gulls but you grow out of these things..

Used to use the same method when I was in the RN for some reason the crystal type toilet cleaner had the same results, officers used to get annoyed with the blood n guts over the ship
So it was a clandestine hobby

That was the best thing to happen to a seagull.

Attack my chickens and steal the eggs all too often, one was a real pest would not go away, it met Mr Magnum. 22 magnum

Every effort to scare it off failed and action was taken as a last resort
