New S&W Model 1905 M&P

Postby Calfed » Wed Dec 16, 2015 3:55 am

At the risk of antagonizing CF...

I recently glommed this 6" model 1905 M&P at an online sale. Serial number is 5042xx, which, I believe, makes it a 4th change model. More pics when it arrives.

Any idea of year of production. Also are the grips original to the gun. I have an early pistol like that with recessed brass S&W medallions. No matter it's a nice find. What caliber is it. I have a similar one in 32-20.
The faster I go, the older I get.

Not sure if the grips are original...some that I've seen have the medallions, so possibly not.

I think the year of production was 1927.

It is a .38 Special

Cool, I checked the grips and they are original to the gun as that what S&W used circa 1930's. Nice find and it appears to be in mice shape. I would be concerned about the bore because back then they used corrosive primers. Hopefully the previous owners did a decent job cleaning the gun. My 32-20 has pitting in the bore due to corrosive primers.
The faster I go, the older I get.

Thanks, Flinty

The auction description advised...

Serial no. 504283, .38 caliber, 6-inch barrel with fixed blade front sight and frame notch rear sight. Blued finish. Case-hardened hammer and trigger. Checkered walnut grip panels. Sold along with three loading accessories and extra walnut grips.

Condition: Very good. Retaining approximately 92-94% finish with thinning at muzzle, scattered handling wear and pitting. Scuffs and dings present to wood. Action crisp. Bright bore.

Not sure what the "extra walnut grips" are, nor the "loading accessories". Supposedly has a "bright bore", but that could mean anything.

The 1905 arrived at my FFL today and I got a chance to look it over before it went into the FFL's safe for the 10 day wait.

Actually looks better in person than the pictures suggests. Bore is in good shape. Was not able to take the grips off to see if they are matching. Everything else seems to match.

Came with an extra set of S&W square butt magna grips and 3 HKS speed loaders (!)
