Section 5 ammo exemption

Postby Keef » Sat Feb 27, 2016 3:49 pm

I do some long range shooting with a .357 underlever and have so far used FMJ bullets with a non pointed front.

I've looking for better accuracy and there are plastic tipped bullets available but these are described by the manufacturer as "Expanding" so would be Section 5.

However I have been told there is an exemption from the Section 5 condition for use of these plastic tipped bullets in a tube magazine rifle.

Looking through the Home Office Guide to the Police I can find no mention of this exemption. Does anyone have more information or can you give a link to the exemption please?

I think that the exempt bullets are a rubbery substance rather than plastic, as in the likes of A-Max, even though the pack I have seen was labelled up as expanding and varmint IIRC.
If you don't have to give up your car because other people commit crimes in their cars, why should I have to give up my firearms because other people commit crimes with their firearms?

I shoot relatively soft lead bullet, i.e. non jacketed, out out my Winchester 1873 at velocities in the neighbor hood of 1700 fps. The bullets are Kieth style flat feature a flat nose as those are what I cast. Soft lead bullets will expand pretty much and any velocity over 1400 fps. I guess when to comes to expanding vs non expanding bullets fire at 357 velocities in rifle the regulations really don't mean very much in a practical sense. It's another "if only it saves one life" misplaced justification.

Our firearm law recognises that most bullets will expand when hitting a hard enough surface so lead unjacketed bullets are permitted. Also target bullets with a hollow point are permitted and bullets such as A Max are specifically mentioned as not being S5.

However any bullet that is designed to expand is classified as a Section 5 bullet and a separate authority to hold it is required which they will not give for target shooting. The Hornady 357 plastic tipped bullets are quoted by the manufacturer as specifically designed to expand so would fall under S5 restrictions. Unless I can find the "Tube magazine " exemption.

On the Hornaday website it does say that the revolutionised leaver guns.

Try printing out the info and sending it to your firearms dept, stranger things have happened and they may grant them for that purpose.
