HMR cases again

Postby mathspete » Wed Jul 06, 2016 1:32 pm

On Saturday I went to one of my farms and was pleasantly surprised to see quite a few bunnies about  The first 3 saw me and promptly legged it, but the 4th was too busy munching and dropped instantly to the HMR at about 60 yards. I peeked around a wall to see another at only 20 yards, and was gobsmacked when after a normal sounding bang it didn't even flinch, I reloaded and resighted but when I fired it was like firing a centrefire with no moderator on and my face and hands were sprayed with powder as the round exploded in the breach. I unloaded with some difficulty and found I couldn't chamber another round and after some fiddling checked the barrel to find it blocked and that was my night over as I didn't have the cleaning rods with me. At home that night I tapped out the head of the round which had stuck half way and had knocked out the previous one. This is the case that exploded in the breech but it was obviously the round before that failed to leave the barrel yet sounded perfectly normal, am I now going to have to look up the barrel every time I don't see the impact?

my RFD has swapped all mine for the brand new re jigged version on the orders of hornady/edgar brothers so after having two episodes I shouldn't have another :hmm:
glad you weren't hurt 8-)

Yes it was an old box of blue tips bought from a place near Wakefield, My new stuff are red tips and I've had no problems with them, I'm now down to about 100 rounds which was why the half box of old stuff surfaced again. I'll have top make enquiries about the price for another 500.

Happened to me twice, first with Remmington and once with red tip Hornady. With the Remmington, was firing at a rabbit 120 yards away, when there was click-bang and thought I'd missed, dropping short. Quickly chambered another and blew the silencer apart, the bullet having stopped at the far end of the barrel, shattering on impact of the second shot. The baffles were damaged and the barrel end spacer flattened on the Swift. Second time, I had click-bang with smoke out of the breech. Unburned powder in the cartridge, with the bullet two inches from the breech. Tapped the bullet out down to the crown end. The CZHMR heavy barrel Varmint is still as accurate. I always check, looking up from the breech, all click-bangs now. Still getting split cases on new Hornady.
