Using a muzzle loader for deer?

Postby Shootist » Thu Aug 18, 2016 5:51 pm

Does anyone know of anybody who uses a muzzle loader for shooting deer in the UK?
If you don't have to give up your car because other people commit crimes in their cars, why should I have to give up my firearms because other people commit crimes with their firearms?

I've have a gun club full of hunters who use muzzle loaders and there's a muzzle loading season provided by the state. Unfortunately this is in the US.
The faster I go, the older I get.

I don`t see why.
the only defining capabilities on deer rifles cites projectile performance/ME and calibre.
so if it fits in the criteria. :hmm:
why would you though :?:
when I worked in Virginia the first 2 or 3 weeks of the season was for bow hunters and black powder guns.

I've used black powder muzzle loaders a few times here in Texas. A group buy got us a nice basic 50 cal in-line rifle for $100.00, picked up a Lee mold and cast my own bullets. They terminate just as well as a center fire.

Yuck, in lines, devil's cursed tools. Need a 1863 Springfield type two wit barrel band sprins with a Robert Hoyt barrel, 70 grains of FFFg, and 0.018 inch lubed patch round ball, it will drop a deer at 100 yards if you hold it true and you can shoot all afternoon.

If your game, load with 120 grains of FFFg but you only get a couple of shots before it fouls. :( :( :( :(

As long as you are at .240 or more and can reach the 1,700 foot pounds it should be OK.

errr, those figures quoted are species dependent.
for the smaller deer and roe in Scotland it's only 1000 ft/lbs and .22 cal.

I'm very much aware of that and only quoted the specs for larger deer because you can use these rifles for the smaller deer as well.

Incidentally you can't use the smaller rounds for roe deer south of Hadrian's wall.

50, 54, or 58 caliber patched round ball loaded with 75 to 120 grains of fffg will bring down a deer. Sight dead on at 50 yards and hold over 6 inches at 100 yards. I really like 58 caliber round ball.
