Unissued N04 MK2's

Postby Calfed » Sun Sep 04, 2016 1:58 am

A couple of years ago I grabbed these Enfields at an online auction. One still in the mummy wrap and the other out, but apparently unfired. They are consecutive serial numbers...UF A 15545 and 15546

This was the auction pic

And this is what I found when the rifles arrived

I have several other Unissued No4 MK2's, including my first No4, which I bought at a LGS years ago. I was cleaning out the safe this afternoon and noticed something about my old No4...UF A 15573-- only 27 numbers off my consecutive pair.

Maybe I'm easily amazed...but I'm somewhat amazed that these rifles, made within minutes of each other in merry olde England, less than a year after I was born , all ended up in the same safe, even though they were purchased many years apart and all the way across country from each other.

Not quite as useless as it sounds, it was one of the first things taught when I joined the Army as an apprentice armourer.

The markings are important in identifying the source of faults since they can narrow down where the guns were built. In days when the British Army could fill twenty football stadiums instead of just the one it does now, firearms were made in various locations,ROF Fazakereley, Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield, Sterling being some.

If say a barrel fault appeared in any numbers they could pin down where the barrels were fitted and what batch numbers they came from and from there issue instructions on which guns to check instead of checking every single one.

A method in the seeming madness.

I've got a couple of "PF" No4 MK2's also.

Any reason why Fazakerley changed the serial number series from "PF" to "UF"?
