best calibre

Postby rgs101 » Sun Oct 30, 2016 7:16 pm

My FAC is nearly due for renewal, i have 1 slot currently left on my FAC which is a .22 air rifle.. i have decided there is no point in getting FAC air, as my hw100 is perfect for smaller land, anything larger and i will just take live fire..

so, now is the time to also ask for a variation for something else..

i currently have

.17hmr
.22lr
.243

and i have an open license for all of them..

what i really want is a rifle that i can take for the bunnies, but if a fox is about i'd like something that can knock him over too, my FEO insists 17hmr is adaquate, but to be honest i feel that both 17 & 22 is a little under powered.

so is there a better calibre that i should consider for what i want??
.243 Howa 1500
.17hmr browning t-bolt
.22 Ruger 10/22
.22 CZ 452
.22 Colt M4 OPS Carbine
.22 HW100 with pulsar N550
12g mossberg 500A pump
.410 hushpower

The HMR should be fine out to 100 yds if you go for head shots. Otherwise, go for a .222.

Stop pissing around. Get a 45/70.

22 Hornet, fine for fox out to 150, 200 if your confident of a good heart or head shot.
Think of it as an HMR on steroids, pretty much the same trajectory but with much more power.

Neil. :)

I use 2 22WMR rifles

A CZ 455 22wmr and a henry 22wmr lever gun.

If I was after one gun it would be the CZ455 does the bunnies and good on fox out to 75 yards

I discussed this last time the FEO paid me a visit. He insisted that South Yorkshire would not allow fox with any rimfire calibre, even when I showed him that my 17 HMR would punch neat holes in 4mm stainless steel. In that case I said I want a 204 so I can do rabbits and fox with just one rifle "no problem" he said so I bought my 204 from a member on here and love it, it doesn't leave a very edible rabbit but the foxes absolutely hate it :cheese: :cheese: . I've not hd one even twitch after hitting, it's flat out to about 250 yards and I barely notice any recoil.

.223

The .204 and .222 would also be fine, but my sense is that the brass for the .223 would be significantly easier to find and cheaper than the .222 or .204.

I would be tempted by a .17 Hornet as a good compromise.

Basically a HMR with extra legs and none of the poor ammo issues, being reloadable centrefire.

Pushes a 20gn bullet at 3750fps or 25gn at 3200.
