.17HMR or .22Hornet???

Postby mikey_abz » Wed Apr 16, 2008 11:05 pm

Guys,

I have FEO coming over on Friday (to discuss my 1st FAC issue.)
I have asked for .22LR and .17HMR however I would eventually like to start home loading(Cf rifles)
should I remain with the original plan or should I divert on friday and try push for a .22Hornet for 1st application?????

Regards,
Mike :geek:

Personally I wouldn't trust you with a balloon on a stick Mike ( :D ), but if you can persuade Doug otherwise then a Hornet gives you more options - i.e. fox.

Hornet is a great tool for all round shooting. Home office guidelines list it for use as a vermin and fox tool, very few others fill that gap.

Cheap to reload and accurate once you've got a good load sorted out.

Mine is going to come into its own after Kev has visited the US and brought me back casting stuff for 44 grain lead bullets. I'm planning using green dot powder to download the Hornet for bunnies. I calculated that I'll get around 1200 loads per tub and with lead costing nothing at all I reckon this could be a very cheap, quiet and accurate load at around 2000 fps for general use.

The HMR doesn't give you the same flexibility but is more accurate at 100 yards and out of the box. If you don't reload, the Hornet is considerably more expensive as well.

No I haven't Mike; not availabe up here as far as I know. Winchester did fine in my gun though and it was cheap enough.

Well done Mike :)

There are a few new Hornets out there :
    CZ American
    CZ Varmint
    Browning A-Bolt
    Remington 699
    Savage Model 40
    Ruger M77's

There are probably many more too.
Personally I'd go for an old BSA or Brno foxmod.

I have the Varmint in .204, but that has a huge 25.5" barrel. Too long for the Hornet. The American model might do you well.
