Approximate cost of reloading a Ruger 204

Postby pisces » Thu Jun 05, 2008 4:24 pm

I'm trying to get a general idea for the approximate cost of reloading a Ruger 204.

Lets assume I buy 60 rounds of factory ammo' then reload 7 times (guessing) before replacing the cases. What would be the approximate cost per reloaded round ?

Also, what would a ball-park figure to budget for the reloading equipment initial outlay. My local dealer wants about £360 for a Lee Reloading kit plus dies.

There is no need to buy factory rounds to get cases to reload! Just buy the cases.
Your dealer is asking way over the odds for the reloading kit. You should be able to get a Lee Anniversary kit and dies for about £120. Less from the US.

As an example over here is the all-in cost (including equipment) for the initial 1000 rounds in .204 Ruger:
Code: Select all
Item                                 Cost per round      Notes
Lee reloading kit and accessories      £0.1200            £120 for the kit / 1000 rounds
Powder                                 £0.1166            £30 for 500g tub. 500g = 7716.2 gr. 30 gr / round
Primers                                 £0.0200            £2 for 100
Brass                                    £0.0160            100 brass cases @ £16. Each reloaded 10 times
Heads                                    £0.1400         £14 for 100 Hornady 32 grain Vmax
Total cost / round   £0.4126

So, the initial 1000 rounds would cost £412.64

The next 1000 rounds would be components only - so :
Code: Select all
Item                                 Cost per round      Notes
Powder                                 £0.1166            £30 for 500g tub. 500g = 7716.2 gr. 30 gr / round
Primers                                 £0.0200            £2 for 100
Brass                                    £0.0160            100 brass cases @ £16. Each reloaded 10 times
Heads                                    £0.1400         £14 for 100 Hornady 32 grain Vmax
Total cost / round   £0.2926

Therefore the cost per 1000 rounds drops to £292.64

When you compare boxed ammo at £14 per 20 where 1000 rounds cost £700, the savings are obvious!

Many thanks for the info'. :)

So, if the initial equipment is excluded, then the cost/round for reloaded Ruger 204 appears to be not a lot more than 17HMR rimfire ammo'. :hmm:

Very true. HMR ammo goes for about 24p per bang at the moment.
