I'm honestly not sure what real world gains this would have over either WMR or HMR though.

No. Where did you hear that?

Aguila are now making ammo:
Image

It would certainly be interesting as the ammo goes at 2300 fps and has a reported BC of .175.
Against an HMR, it would look like this:

POI (inch)
Image

Energy (lb.ft)
Image

Wind drift at 5 mph (inch)
Image

Wind drift at 10 mph (inch)

On paper, it looks like an excellent alternative to an HMR - potentially even a Hornet :)

I may just buy one if they do release it - a .204 rimfire would be cool 8-)

It looks like CZ really are going to be making them - here is a Guns and Ammo article about it

It will have to be good to prize my Hornet away from me :)

The biggest benefit is just being able to batter through ammo while lamping without having to look for every bit of brass :D

Looks the biz. Be interesting to see one. What would the trajectory be like compared to the WMR? :) :)

It would be much flatter than the WMR. The WMR trajectory is something like this:

Range Bullet Path
0 -1.65
10 -0.92
20 -0.29
30 0.23
40 0.63
50 0.91
60 1.04
70 1.03
80 0.86
90 0.52
100 0
110 -0.72
120 -1.66
130 -2.82
140 -4.22
150 -5.88
160 -7.81
170 -10.03
180 -12.55
190 -15.38
200 -18.55

The two shooters who did the actual development work for this Aguilla ammunition are friends of mine - Tim Mancillas and Andy Moe their Full article on this cartridge is here:

http://www.varminter.com/2008/5mmrrm.html

I think the CZ option is on the back burner since the financal meltdown taking free £/$'s for gun purchase out of peoples pockets ?

You may find this thread of some interest as it has the details of latest ammo that Aguilla have produced for Tim and Andy.

Actually this is making me miserable - I'm way overdue a visit to Tim and Andy to visit their "dog town" in Montana
If it has a trigger I'm gonna enjoy it!

Have you posted anything on this forum previously about your prairie-dog experiences? As quarry they don't appeal to me as much as groundhogs, which i've done a couple of trips after, but some day I'd certainly like to try PDs...

I'm surprised to see Aguila's illustration features a JSP-style bullet (described on the packaging as a "jacketed hollow-point") rather than the polymer-tipped type that is dominant on HMR rounds and favoured by many WMR shooters.

English, do you know why your buddies chose this bullet type?

Prarie Dog Hunting............

Actually IVe never done this. Although I have been to Texas in for the last 3 years(Pig hunting + Pistols + Full Auto + Long Range .50 cal)

I have not made it back to meet with Tim and Andy for family reasons that were impossible to avoid :(

In 2005 I was booked to fly to California and then Road Trip to Montana to meet up as Andy has moved there, sadly at the last minute I couldn't get.

The interest arises from the fact that they present good targets at long distances and the challenge is in doping the wind I live in hope of making a trip to them sometime hopefully next year?

Why the JSP Lead? The real answer is that I dont know, however the work they did for Aguilla preceded the .17hmr and the .17hm2 and the availability of any .17 polymer tipped bullets and my guess is that they could only get those .17 JSP or .17FMJ bullets at the time the round was developed?
If it has a trigger I'm gonna enjoy it!

Wow, the full works... Texas is on my list of desirable destinations, for fishing as well as hunting.

Yes, that's what I like about varminting - that, and seeking them out, spying out the land, careful glassing of the landscape, sorting out your rifle/ammo to shoot accurately at a distance... I'm still hopeless at doping the wind though. As I say, i'd like to try PDs myself one day, though they're a bit too small to be as interesting to me as groundhogs which IMO are the perfect varminting quarry species.

Mr Gain:

QUOTE (English @ Sep 28 2009, 10:54 PM)
Thanks for the reply and heads up on the other thread.

Would you mind posting at Shootforum regarding the JSP bullet choice on the Aguilla .17 ammo rather than a .17gn Poly tip?

Thanks

English

Nah! I don't feel like registering at another Forum! You can tell them for me it was because Aguila does not make a poly tip bullet. Additionally, it was felt that a poly tip bullet might not be going fast enough for reliable expansion so they elected for sectional density in the 20 grain SP. This was a design spec that was completed about a decade before production. Originally it was supposed to be based on the longer "Super Maximum" 22LR case but the Powers That Be at Industrias Tecnos nixed that and ordered it made on the shorter (standard) LR casing.~AMMOe

Thanks English,

I'm not sure where the stuff about 17s and 20-grain bullets came from, but I understand that Aguila wanted to use their own bullets rather than buying in poly-tipped ones from someone else just for a small (?) improvement in the BC.

ISTM that if 30-grain WMR bullets and .17-grain HMR poly-tipped bullets fragment well, a .20 bullet weighing the same as the latter but travelling almost as fast as the former should too.

My experience with WMR ammo has been that the poly-tipped loads (Federal and Remington) give significantly better accuracy than loads with more-traditional JSP and other bullets, so it would be interesting to know how well the Aguila 5mm ammo shoots by comparison.

Like everyone with an interest in Magnum rimfires, I imagine, I really hope the 5mm takes off, as this would mean we'd have not only a choice of rifles but a choice of projectiles.

(I know it's possible to do custom "reloads" with WMR rounds, and that this is probably also true of the 5mm as well, but life's too short as it is!)
