Ruger 10/22

Fri Aug 29, 2014 4:20 pm

Just bought myself a Ruger 10/22, first impression on opening it up was it was well made and clean inside and out, comes with a yellow plastic indicator that fits in the breech and holds the bolt open so its easy to see that the gun is safe and not loaded, also has a catch in front of the trigger guard that locks the bolt open, which is what i use in the house
Got a cheapo Hawk 3-9 scope and put it all together screwed on the sound mod then out to the garden range with a few boxes of ammo Eley, Winchester & CCI, zeroed in with Eley, and its puting shot on shot 1/2 inch 10 shot rapid fire goups, so realy pleased with the gun , it shoots great with the Eley & CCI but does not like the winchesters about 1 in 20 rounds fail to eject correctly

They are great rifles for the price, and the aftermarket list of bling an accessories is just about endless.

CCI and Eley are the best ammunition for them if you are using subsonic rounds - they seem to cycle much better than anything else.

The anti gravity device was an optional extra, and its also great for getting it zeroed

Try the CCI SEGMENTED they cost a bit more but are superb on bunnies.

My Ruger likes them the best out of all the subs. But for accuracy on target (25m) The RWS TARGET RIFLE. R100 for longer range (100m)

Put a Timney trigger in and you wont look back.

Yeh mine loved Eley subs but hated Remingtons and Winchesters.

Ray, A word of warning. DO NOT! By all that is holy... DO NOT! Even consider tweaking (customizing) your 10/22.

Once you start, you're hooked.

(5) 10/22s and the only thing original on them is the bolt and receiver. The last one I bought cost $150.00 That rifle is now worth $900.00 (Price of Nikon scope not included)

I'm telling ya straight.....once you're bit by the bug......

A word about ammo.

10/22s each has it's own preferences. Try as many brands and style with each rifle. Surprisingly, what works for one will not work for all.

Even normally crappy ammo actually might be the one that your rifle likes. I got one of those. It loves Winchester "Bulk" ammo. The cheapest you can buy.

mine is staying a straight out of the box non customised bunny basher
but the Mrs is getting her FAC and was shooting a highly customised jobbie at the range,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, so you know what is going to happen
was looking in the Cabelas catalogue (one of my collegues is Canadian) and the custom stocks in there are dirt cheap compared to buying in uk, so will get the bits and pieces sent from ''over the pond'' the bits that are legal to post to uk that is, as far as trigger jobs ,,, forget it its a .22 not a bloody sniper rifle
at the end of the day if the Mrs is happy so am I
PS had the grand daughters out (6yo & 8yo) shooting from 40 yards at 1 inck discs,, and both of them scored 10 out of 10 hits,,,,,

Ray, build this "ultra lite" 10/22 for the Mrs.

Hogue "Over Molded" stock.
Volquartsen Carbon Fiber barrel (it has a tensioned stainless steel insert) Same accuracy as a SS bull barrel but, a lot lighter
Volquartsen TG2000 trigger.

To add reliabilty: replace the Ruger extractor with a Volquartsen "Exact Edge" and replace the steel bolt stop pin with a poly-urethane pin.

After she shoots that she'll be more receptive to your request to "do something" with yours. (we'll go with a Kidd trigger)

I don't call mine "Bunny Bashers" More like "fly splatterers"

;)

I bought some 'Delrin' pins off eBay. I think they were about £6 for two.

You can also get an adapter to change the bolt 'hold open' so you just pull the bolt back again to release, rather than the fiddly toggle thingy there is as standard. There is at least one YouTube video on how to simply adapt the existing one with a Dremel and / or a file.

Ray,

http://www.rimfirecentral.com

These guys live and breath 10/22s. They can point you towards a reliable supplier. One of the guys that used to be there is the "inventor" of the urethane stopper. I participated in his testing before he went "public" Brownelles used to have them as an "extracter and pin" reliability kit. btw, in America we call them "Bolt Stop Pins.

Guys, if you search on Ebay Delrin rod they sell it in 12 inch lengths meaning you get loads of buffer pins for about £3-00 you just have to cut it to fit.

.

Dam 1022 building is addictive and costly ! the only part Ruger on mine is the upper, all the rest has been changed, resulting it eats any ammo.
