A question for defender owners

Postby scoop » Fri Nov 27, 2015 11:40 am

I have the chance of a W reg 110 which has a td5 engine with 133000 miles
Is there something i should look out for ?
I've not driven land rovers for at least 10 years and they were tdi 200 and 300 models

TD5's are great engines that are massively detuned from manufacture. Earlier ones had plastic "pegs" to locate the head, these were prone to movement. Responds really well to an ECU remap :niceone: Check the loom from engine to ECU, oil tracks through it I think plugs to check are blue and yellow. The thin oil tracks across and causes poor running. Easy cheap fix.
Apart from the usual chassis, outriggers, cross member rust, they are a bomb proof motor.

Bin the EGR and CAT, get a remap and bigger intercooler and enjoy a life of driving a colander :die:

Also check the turbo actuator is moving freely. Use molegrips to shift it.

No worries. If the MAF goes faulty (and they do) don't be tempted to buy a cheap copy.

Get an EGR blanking kit, (they're about £15 if I recall) that brought me a large boost in mpg as the engine runs so much more efficiently on cold, oxygen rich air rather than hot, oxygen depleted exhaust gasses  . I enquired about an engine remap and that cost about£300 so decided against it as with the mileage I do the saving would never make it worthwhile. Enjoy yourself and the peace of mind of knowing that whatever the weather you'll never be stuck
