Pellet choice

Postby Axel » Wed Jul 10, 2013 12:05 pm

Hi

I've been comparing some different brands of pellet as follows:

Crosman Destroyer
Crosman Premier Domed
Bisley Pest Control
H&N Field target Trophy
Prometheus
Big Boy Senior

I've had greatest accuracy with the Bisleys (8.9) grain and the H&N (8.6 grain.) Next come the Crosman PDs (10.5grain) and Destroyers (7.4grain) , all accurate enough to take hunting. The Destroyers and Bisleys are hollow point types and flatten out nicely on impact. The Big Boy Senior (15.8 grain) were wildly inaccurate, not just firing low as you'd expect, due to their weight and the soft lead that they appear to be made of.

The Prometheus pellets were also very inaccurate, which came as a surprise, because they look well made and built for accuracy and high penetration. I gave up after 10 rounds and went back to the H&ns, but couldn't get the rifle to fire on target, it was hitting way right and after a good 5 group, I had to adjust the scope to get it back on the bull. Have read on other forums, since, that you can damage your barrel with them. So THEY won't be used again.

Is it possible that the Prometheus pellets acted as a bore cleaner, due to their plastic skirt? and that I'll have to re-lead the bore? It's the only explanation that I can dream up!

Has anyone else got any theories?

To sum up, I'll stick mainly to the Bisleys and H&Ns as they seem to suit the rifle better than the heavier pellets.

Cheers!

I notice you haven't tried Air Arms pellets. In every air rifle I've owned, springers and pre charged, 177 and 22, FAC or sub 12, they are the most accurate. Just as effective on quarry as hollow points, which tend to lose accuracy at distance.
If you don't have to give up your car because other people commit crimes in their cars, why should I have to give up my firearms because other people commit crimes with their firearms?

I agree, but JSB`s are the same pellet as air arms as they are made in the Czech rep. by JSB.

Yes i have a couple of tins of JSB and they are exactly the same as air arms and work well

I dont see the need for hollow points as probably not enough power for them to expand unless you have FAC rifle

A long range, yes. I have compared hollow points at 15M into a pellet tin(not sure if this a suitable skull/brain- heart/lung substitute, probably a bit hard?)

To update on my original post, the rifle gradually started to fire left as more pellets went through it, so much so, that I had adjust my scope to where it was set in the first place.

Something is loose, and / or, the scope is buggered.

ps
all the pointed and hollow pointed pellet ideas are flawed, mainly down to consecutivity, unless the point or hollow point are exactly the same ie centeral each pellet will pull to one side either horizontally or vertically differently ;)
i spent a lot of money and time working this out through a lot of guns ,ending in working out that most of the adds in mags are talking sh1t,round nose are the way forward unless your target/close up pest controling then flat nose is best
