Air Arms S200 .177

Postby Jakep_17 » Sun Jan 04, 2015 3:32 pm

Afternoon all! I'm a bit of a newbie to the airgunning game, really trying to get into it as i've shot clay pigeon before and it just weren't for me so i'm considering treating myself to this.

http://www.southyorkshireairguns.co.uk/ ... 2078-p.asp

Anybody got any opinions? Does that price look about right? Is .177 okay for rough shooting?

Thanks a lot chaps, Jake

At that price for used, I'd rather go new: http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/pro ... rd+Barrel/

The scope isn't particularly good on the one you linked to, so add £100 or so for mounts/scope.

Do you have a pump or air bottle?

Opinions vary between .177/.20/.22/.25 but if I was in the market, i'd go for .177.

Thanks for the advice humperdingle. Looking at the price of a new one, you're definitely right. I haven't got a pump or an air bottle but i live minutes away from a diving centre that fill them up for a couple of quid. Is air arms a brand that you'd recommend for a newbie? I'll have a scan around for a .177. Thanks a lot

Hard to beat at that price, mate. Many FT/HFT youngsters have started out on an S200 as it's relatively light.

There's an Air Arms forum someplace, have a search for that.

I think many people use a stirrup pump for these guns. Self-contained etc, if you can physically manage the workout

it depends on what you'll use the gun for,but if it's hunting you really need a multishot like an air arms S410/510

HI

I have a MKII AA S200 (.177) with the AA 10 shot magazine unit fitted, together with an HW moderator. I have used this kit since 2005 and reckon it to be superb. I have mine on FAC and run it at 12.2fpe. I used to run at 11.6 ish before putting it on ticket. The most efficient pellet through my barrel is the Daystate (JSB) Heavies 10.25 grains.

If it were me, I would go for a MKIII in .177, and fit the 10 shot mag when you are ready. The HW moderator makes the unit nearly silent, but you will need to buy and adaptor.

IMO, the S200 is fantastic rifle. IIRC, the S200 barrel was fitted on one of the AA top class target rifle.

I had an Air Arms s400 regretted selling it, must say im not so keen on the s200 though.

The S400 was spot on very accurate in 177 and was good on bunnies, fit it with a Rowan engineering mag kit and it's a real great rifle, as for the 177 vs 22 my money goes on the 177 unless fac

With ref to getting it delivered to your local gun shop, get them to order you one then if it goes wrong there is less messing about getting fixed

as said rifle is ok, scope is not very good, way overpriced
multishot would be better, hw100kt is the best of the lot imho

Afternoon all, i apologise for the lack of replies from me; the wifi has been down and trying to get around the forum using my phone proved difficult due to the screen size :thdn: (i should have put at the start i'll be using the gun for rough shooting) Despite that, i'd like to thank you all very much for your productive replies! I've read them all carefully and took in what you said. With the information from your replies, i'm going to start concentrating on the .177 market. Also, by the looks of it, Air Arms with a few adjustments can produce excellent results. My Dad and his friend had always used .22 (Falcon Fn12 and Falcon Fn19) so i think thats why i were more inclined to look for a .22 when i first started looking at rifles, they always seemed to get results from them. But, like i said i'll now start looking into the .177 market  it seems like the best option. Also, is it best to stick to PCP? I think i'd prefer to but i just want a couple of opinions really. I don't want to be spending ridiculous amounts on my first gun as i'm guessing a lot of people want to upgrade after they have gained experience and more knowledge so my limit would be £450-£500 i'd say. Thank you all again chaps, your replies are very much appreciated :)

I went into a gunshop once, looking for a rifle in .177.... "Why would you want that?", he asked.

He only had .22 in stock.

Apart from shot count, you will find it hard to "upgrade" (in terms of performance) from an AA S200. I ended up trusting my £250 S200 n times more than my £1,100 Daystate Air Wolf.
