Pellet for ratting

Postby Oaken » Wed Jun 14, 2017 1:24 am

Any recommendations for a budget pellet for ratting?
I'm using fx cyclone at 22ftlb to shoot 300+ rats a night at my local tip. It's getting expensive with AAfield @ 13.99 a tin. Or maybe there is somewhere I can get the AAs in bulk with a decent discount?

The best thing is to shop around , pellets are a little pricey now especially the better ones , I use Bisley pest control hollow point and they don't come cheap . If you were buying a substantial amount I would hope you could negotiate with the dealer .

300 rats a night   I bet that's a lot of fun   . Even at the most rat infested of my fishing venues I'm lucky to get into double figures now. I was given several tins of AA field and Bisleys about 5 years ago as payment for a job, so I haven't needed to buy any pellets for years now, so 14 quid a tin is a shock to me.

Yes, it's mad!
There's 6 of us that shoot there.
We all get between 2-400 a night and the rat population never seems to go down in the summer.
Don't even need a lamp as its floodlit all night.
I take a folding chair and my air bottle. I just shoot as fast as I can reload.
It's a disgusting place but manic sport

RWS Superdome, RWS Superfield and Accupels are about the "cheapest" decent pellets around, even though their prices have increased over the past couple of months. It's always cheaper to buy in bulk, too. Try Countryway - good prices and good service.

Thanks for that link. I have ordered a tin each of RWS field and RWS hp to see which go well and consistently in my FX before contacting them about a bulk order. £9 each is certainly better than £13 for the AirArms :-)

Id happily pay 13.99 for shooting over 350 rats in a night, what cheap great fun. How many pints could you buy ifnyour local pub for that, and how many packets of fags could one buy.

Is saving a couple of quid on a tin of pellets really an issue?

I have looked on eBay but can buy at my local shop at about the same. The link from Les above seem to be the best deal around. Still a shocking price compared to prices only a few years ago. Maybe this reflects on the quality of airguns available nowadays or just too many middle men taking a cut.

Good session at the tip last night. It was absolutely crawling. Used the last pellet out of a new tin of 500 just as the sky started to lighten. As usual, only planned to go for a few hours

247. Yes it is fun but is essentially pest control so keeping costs down is an issue for me. One visit a week costs out at £730 a year in pellets + £50ish for air, that would buy a new barrel for for my .260! Switching to RWS could save me £200 which will buy a fair amount of beer.

Quick update. RWS hollow points shoot very well (reasonably accurate) in my cyclone out to 30yds which is fine in the close confines of the tip. Where the AA fields would drill strait through, the hp's are simply devastating!
I have negotiated a price of £75 for 10 tins which will save me a fortune
Btw. I also found that the H&N Barracuda Hunter is a superb long range hollow point pellet in the Fac FX  though not going to waste them on rats.

These are even cheaper and work superbly well.

Made by H&N to a good standard

Great on rats, they give me a 1/4 in group at 25 yards

The Predator Polymag pellet is a damn good choice if one is using .177 at close range. BUT one needs to remove the plastic pointy bit.

The lead is softer than most pellets and it results in the pellet expanding.

I have a few identical plastic water bottles and every time I used a JSB Exact, the pellet exited the bottle. The JSB Predator Polymags did not.

I've just finished reading an article about H&N Hornet and JSB Predator Metal Mag in .177. Although probably a little pricey for the purpose mentioned below, but has anyone got any experience in their use and stopping power?
