Cosh or Silencer

Understand from report's from one of the persons Associates

That a Shooters was stopped and vehicle checked

Where a large FAC Silencer was Found in the Vehicle
Which the Police understood to have possible thought of it as a weapon cosh

But understand that a Fire Arms Officer was called and Accepted it was a Fire Arm Silencer
and no other Action was Taken

Now as a Silencer for Fire Arm has to be listed on a Certificate

Would it not be a offence to carry it without carrying a Certificate

And without the Gun and Certificate can no see a Legal reason for having it in a Vehicle

Look forward to the owners reply

OOOOohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

NOT me by the way but;

It's not an offence to carry firearms without certifictae

It must have been in the vehicle as he was obviously taking to a friend's house to have the bore diameter checked (it appeared to be too small).

Obviously...................

Why would you need to carry your licence ever?

Sounds like a lot of fuss about nothing, if he's just taking it to the shop, or collecting it theres no issue at all.

Just as there isnt if you have a 24" length of lead pipe, no issue if you have a reason.

much ado about nothing isnt it? i mean if you want to cosh someone there are lots of better and cheaper things than a silencer that you cant be nicked for - a maglite for example

its not even illegal to have a baseball bat in your car providing you also have a baseball to go with it

i wouldnt want to risk damaging a silencer by using it as a cosh!

Gary,

I'd have to disagree there mate.
My FEO explained very clearly that a silencer is a component part of a firearm and remains a firearm whether or not its fitted.
This conversation arose when he found my moderators on top of the gun cabinet. They now remain locked up all the time.

He's an idiot.
The silencer is not serial numbered, Therefore I have a parker hale on my airgun, and one on my rimmy. I take them both off. Which one is the FAC one?
Do I need an FAC to buy a T8? when I buy a DM80 is it logged on my ticket?

It only becomes a firearm when it's stuck on one

Some silencers are serial numbered - the one on my HMR was and therefore could not be used on any other gun.

Isnt it classed as a firearm from the moment it goes on your ticket regardless of whether its on a rifle or not?

Otherwise, why is it even on the ticket?

Having said that - I have a silencer on my Weihrauch that could easily be fitted and used on an .22lr and I dont even have a FAC so is it a firearm or not?

This one is bit grey isnt it? Can someone in the know shed some light on this?

Full bore moderators in the UK are firearms. they must be entered onto your ticket and kept locked up.

Air rifle silencers can be either firearms or a not depending on whether they have a serial number and are entered onto a certificate or not.

Silencers without serial numbers as long as they are air rifle / rimfire and not on ticket are not firearms unless they are attached to a firearm which is not a sub 12 ft/lb air rifle. If they're attached to an FAC air rifle or rimfire or bigger, they're firearms and if not on the certificate for that rifle, it is illegal. Once they're off the gun, then they're not a firearm. Getting caught is the problem.

As most moderators don't have serial numbers and many are impossible to tell the manufacturer, then it would be difficult to prove they were firearms (ie: DM80 for full bore). Rimfire mods also work on air rifles and are even more complex; I have at least five of them and only three on certificate. All are equal in terms of performance but as they have no ID or serial number I could swap them around and there wouldn't be any way of prosecuting me for having the wrong one on my rifle.

Full bore moderators are different; most (apart from DM80) are well enough known makes and can easily be identified. A full bore mod would not be likely to be used on an air rifle so it could be assumed that they are always firearms.... Except that I have three of them and can swap between calibres and guns as again there are no Identificating marks on any of them

Any clearer???

Hi Guys,

i think it's one of those grey areas in the VCR act. I had a similar conversation with the chap at my local gunshop, he said that i could buy an FAC rated silencer for my 12 ft/lb rifles and he could sell one to me with no problems. If however i said i want it for an FAC rifle then i would have to produce a ticket. I do know that if you wish to use one on an FAC rated gun it must be on your ticket, but you don't need a ticket to buy one! :?

So on it's own i doubt if it would be classed as a firearm, unless you used it as a pea shooter!

These new laws must make sense to someone, i just haven't met them yet!
