I've only ever used the one that came with my ATN, it's 450mw I think and does the job pretty well on my Gen 1 sight.

Hi,
Did you get your best IR for a gen3 unit. There are different varieties of IR that can be used.
What type of IR exactly you need.

Welcome to the Forum.
Would you like to introduce yourself and give a few details such as where you live and what sort of shooting you do?

Thanks Keef.
I live in North Salt Lake, Utah. Actually at present I don't do shooting, but I am interested in doing it, and that's Why I am here to learn from people with experience.

Welcome to the forum Remensongalli!!! Good luck on selecting your first gun(s).
I have the same question as to the best IR illuminator. I like the Surefire products for their compactness however they are expensive. The problem that I find with the illuminators is that the powerful ones seem to bleached out the target with reflected IR light especially off nearby vegetation and the weaker illuminators lights are only adequate for closer ranges. I guess that it comes down to matching the illuminator to the average range that you intend to shoot. I have the a similar onboard illuminator as MathPete and it is adequate out to 50 yards and somewhat beyond without bleaching out the target with reflected light. I only use the illuminator when there isn’t sufficient ambient light in the passive mode. I would tend to use a more powerful illuminator at long distances only as in 100 yards or so plus.

But there are many illuminators are available in the market which is good and affordable as compare to others in the market. I find this information

n100 with 3 power settings takes some beating for an IR light to use with n/v scope, small compact & 100yds + with any half decent gen 1 !

Hi there from UK
I have used a number of different IR illuminators over the years as I have a number of NV devices, a Pulsar n750 digital scope, a DFA75 device that clips onto the front of a dayscope and a Envis Gen 3 that fits to an adaptor that attaches to the eyepiece on the back of a dayscope.
Recently I have settled for a single unit that attaches to all 3 devices. It is a Nightmaster 800IR, a small torch that provides extended range on both my digisights and my conventional green Envis. I am not sure what range you are shooting out to at night but for me its ideal as I can view clearly out to 200 yards and shoot confidently at 100-150yards which is the maximum on the land I shoot over.
There are much better IR devices out there but at very high cost so I have settled for a single cost effective device that is portable across different rifles.
I have also looked through a traditional gen 1 device and the 800IR made a marked difference in clarity, more than doubling the effective range.
Good luck with your choice
