Condensation.

Postby Stinkfoot » Thu Nov 22, 2012 6:07 pm

I spent yesterday afternoon hidden behind a straw bale waiting for the roe to appear from the woods. My rifle, with Nikon Monarch 6-24x50, sat on top of the bale.
Every 5 minutes or so I would look through the scope into the woods and all was fine.
After about an hour I looked through the scope and could see nothing. The scope had completely misted up. Not on the inside, I'm glad to say, just the outside of the glass.
Yesterday was cold and dry.

2 questions:
Would this be down to the heat coming from the bale?
Is there some kind of magic solution I can use to clean the glass and reduce misting?

I'm sure spectacle wearers have similar problems when coming into a warm house from the cold outdoors.

It'll be the moist, warm air from the bale condensing on the glass... A jacket or similar over the bale might help?

That sounds so obvious, I'm almost embarrassed I asked such a dumb question.
Cheers, Mark.

You could try applying a little liquid soap, just a tiny drop on the finger, rubbing it on the glass and allow it to dry. Then polish it off with a clean dry cloth.

good luck. Alan

I have the 8-32 ED scope and cant say this has been a problem for me.
A bale does give off a lot of warm, moist air though. A jacket or other covering over the bale sounds like a great idea.
