Scope elevation for longer distances?

I was shooting at 1000 yards a little while ago and I ran out of elevation on my scope.

I was good to 600 yards and I calculated I was good at 800 yards but I did not have
enough adjustment on my scope to do 1000. I was aiming at the number above the target
and 3 out of 5 bullets hit (spotted by a spotter). After returning my scope back to
zero at 100 yards I realised I had enough adjustment in the scope to do the 1000 but
only if the scope was mounted on the rifle differently.

So the question

To allow my scope to be adjusted out to 1000 yards I have to lower the rear mounts??

Is that correct?

Regards

Rob

No. Lower the front (or raise the rear). Or fit an inclined scope rail which will avoid bending the scope tube.
If you don't have to give up your car because other people commit crimes in their cars, why should I have to give up my firearms because other people commit crimes with their firearms?

Fit a 20 moa set of mounts.. They're designed for 1000 yard shooting..

For example:

Thank you.

I'm still struggling with elevation.

It took me 15 mins at the Bisley 25 mtr zero range to work out
where the bullet would hit when the scope was zeroed to 100 mtr.

Thanks again

If you have an Android phone, or possible the Apple equivalent, get the app 'Strelok'. It will work it out for you. It's never yet failed to get me on the paper at least at Bisley.

Have you sorted your scope mount problem? A 20 moa rail will get you well past 1,000yds or the Burris signature rings with the plastic inserts work well.
http://www.opticswarehouse.co.uk/produc ... cope+Rings

If you have a basic ballistic program on your phone it's easy to calculate where you need your shots to go on the Zero range. (This is actually 71'7") The official Zero targets are calibrated for the standard 7.62 military round.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... k&hl=en_GB

For this to work accurately you will need to know velocity and BC of bullet.

For example, my 6.5 x 284, shooting a 142gn bullet at 2,800 and zeroed at 100yds will be 1.1 inches high at 24 yards for a zero at 100yds.

If I want to find out how high it needs to be for 1,000 yards, set your zero range at 1000 yards and read off what it will be at 25 yards = 6.73 inches (6.38 at 24 yards)

This method gets me on the target straight away. If I'm shooting 100 yds in the morning and 1000 in the afternoon you can use the same method. A target patch stuck on the bottom of the target frame at 100 yds as an aiming mark and the bullet strike needs to be 31.1" high.

Hope that helps.

Thank you.

I actually understood you, you explained it very well :)

I have a paper target now that does exactly what you said with the zero and actual
position the bullet hits, dependent on distance.

I will use the app you and Shootist recommend.
