Leupold AR Mod 1 6-18 x 40

Don't buy cheap glass!

Leupold AR Mod 1 6-18 x 40

Postby Deallad » Sun Apr 26, 2015 7:58 pm

After buying a new air rifle I took the scope off my 22 CZ (well a guy has to try his new toy) so I had to buy another.

I opted for the Leupold AR Mod 1 AO 6-18 x 40 I purchased Warne rings as always found them to be a good solid mount and reliable.

A quick no hassle phone call to Uttings saw my scope arrive, it was very well packed, with some swift manipulation of the scissors I got to the Leupold box, off with the cellophane wrapping and I was there.

Inside the box lay my new scope in foam protectors, fantastic, the first looks revelled a quality product, the build is superb this is one tough cookie upon raising it to the eye the glass was bright, rotating the dioptre brought the cross hair razor sharp. Tighten the locking ring and it is good to go.

I judge scopes by looking at the name tag on a satellite dish approx. 200 yards away (1/2 inch letters), if I can read it and it's sharp the scope gets mounted to a rifle, if not it not then back it goes, the Leupold passed the test with ease.

Next job was to mount it on the rifle and set the eye relief, with the Warne torque wrench this is a simple task five minutes later job done.

Zeroing was easy, the clicks are very positive, on 18x mag the focus was pin sharp and target detail was easy to read, the distance calibration on the AO lens was spot on so will give good range estimation, out in the field the colours looked superb, and as the light started to fade vision was still good, then darkness fell, backing the magnification down to 10x the scope was still useable with out the lamp.

The clicks are 1/2 MOA I thought this was going to be a problem but not so, with the average rabbit head over 2 3/4 inch its no big deal, with 56 MOA of adjustment there is more than enough for the 22 CZ.

At a cost of £569-00 it is not cheap, but you get what you pay for in optics and you want to ensure a clean kill so reliability is the name of the game.

Judging it against my Schmidt and Bender 5-25 x 56 PM2 costing £2,450 it's exceptional value for money so much so I have ordered another for the 22 WMR /17HMR

As mentioned above, I bought this scope from Uttings, I have to say their service was first class and fast with next day delivery, I have ordered a few things from them now, I fine they are reliable with good understanding of the products they sell and bend over backwards to serve the customer.

Hope you find this review of help

Cool!!!!

Selecting a nice scope can be a tough decision. There are some great scopes and high end scopes it tends to last a life time. I recently picked a Trijcon VCOG and it suits my needs for the type of shooting that do. It was a difficult choice but one that I am happy to live with.

1/2 moa sounds coarse adjustment for a reasonable quality scope - that's more than 5" per click at 1,000 yds.

Agreed, but it is designed for use with a .223 and 55gr heads so it should be fine up to 600 yds or so.

It's an 1/8th at 25 yards 1/4 at 50 so will be ok for the use I got it (out to 100 yards) also Loupold will make up the turrets for the 22lr 17hmr and 22wmr

I had a look at the 6-20 x 40 but the price went to £799 for an extra 2x ouch I thought! Though I will be sticking to the S&B Pm2 for the big stuff

If that were SidebySide asking the question I would consider it pointless. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Should push a 69gn 223 Lapua out to 600 yards (75 MOA adjustment)

Now got 2 of them, one on the 22lr and one on the 22wmr great for bunny and fox bashing

Thinking about getting the 6.5 -20 x 40 for the 22lr as I use it for target on the bipod and bunny bashing. Then put the 6-18 on the Steyr air rifle which is used for target, ratting and pigeons.
