Spotting Scope

Don't buy cheap glass!

Spotting Scope

Postby libensvolenspotens » Wed Jul 08, 2015 4:40 pm

I am planning on shooting long ranges in the not too distant future and would appreciate any advice on a good spotting scope.
I am looking for high magnification, excellent clarity & light gathering.
Reasonably priced would be a bonus but I'd rather buy once than buy cheap twice.

Any recommendations gratefully received!

Thanks,
Dave

Get a Swarovski 20 to 60 X. I bought a cheap scope one that never was any good for distance. I replaced it with the Swarovski about 15 years ago I haven't need another. It will last my lifetime and beyond. I can see bullet holes at 200 yards and that will get me by nicely. Unfortunately they are not cheap.

I have been considering Swarovski but I'll be wanting to see holes at1000yards+ so will need plenty of magnification.
With Swarovski that equates to mucho Dinero!
Still on the list!
Just wondered if there was something that the target shooters could recommend for 1000+ yards.
Cheers,

Dave

Could you not get a FPV style camera/monitor set-up, like they use on some quadcopters?

You'd need a forward observer to see bullet holes at that distance and to call in air strikes just to be sure. ;) ;) ;)

Look for a Kowa TSN 821 - they are as good as scopes costing 4x the money, but they are not easy to find.

Target shooters don't usually need that much quality. Their targets are marked and all you need is to see the marker. I've used a pair of 10x Practica binoculars to do the job and they were adequate even for 1,000 yards. To see bullet holes at 1,000 yards any scope that will pick them out, if indeed you can find one, is going to make your wallet bleed from a major artery. Unless you are shooting with a 6" naval gun. If you can find such a beast then the magnification will mean you will also need a really solid stand for it as the slightest vibration will produce such blurring as to make it unusable.

What will you be shooting at that needs you to see the bullet holes? If it's a fixed target then a remove viewing system will probably be better, and cheaper, than a scope.

Not a 6" gun but1/2" & I'll need a spotter so wanted good glass. From what I understand, the blast will preclude me seeing fall of shot so a spotter is required to advise.
It's a whole new adventure for me as I've never tried anything like this before so any advice is welcomed.
As soon as I pick up the rifle I'll post a few pics.

Dave

Dave,

bullet hols at 1000 will be interesting - might be better to use a higher mag scope.

But in saying this I use a Zeiss Spotter 60 and have found it to be as good as anything I've owned previously, Kowa's included.

Also being compact, robust, FFP and illuminated are all bonuses
