Torque settings?

Postby varminter » Wed Jun 03, 2009 9:48 am

I'm always careful and thorough when mounting scope bases onto a new rifle, aligning the rings etc, but I've never come across actual torque figures for tightening the machine screws holding the ring-halves together. Anybody know what they should be? I've often thought I should give up doing it by the seat of my pants/guesswork, and tighten rings to a standard figure - there are some nifty small torque-screwdrivers around, though recommendations for a particular brand would be welcome.

Thanks, that helps. Now to locate an affordable torque-driver...

Varminter,

Depends on the make of ring,

Here's Seekins answers: http://www.seekinsprecision.com/index_p.php?p=rings

Badger ordinance: http://www.badgerordnance.com/productgroup.php?id=rings (.pdf file at bottom of page gives installtion instructions and values)

Warne's: http://www.warnescopemounts.com/scopering_chart.html (single value torque wrench)

Nightforce : http://www.nightforceoptics.com/LIBRARY/library.html (download the owner manual it has all the info in their)

hope this gives you some pointers.

Indeed it does Terry, many thanks - hope you had this info to hand already, rather than scratching around on my behalf... I thought Warne were Australian, but following your link they are based in OR/USA. The mounts on my Win 223 are branded Tasco but are made in Australia, so I presume they're actually made by Warne - unless I'm confusing them with someone else. I think Tasco scopes are crap but these mounts are damn good.

Thanks for that. Followed your link, looks like a nifty set, price seems typical for this sort of kit, might put one on my birthday wish-list...

ps I can't get my head around those metric torque settings in newton-centimeters etc, but an excellent web-based conversion system I've come across is here:

Bought mine from the states when the exchange rate wasn't screwed and it cost about £25 delivered. Can't remember where from though. Might have been brownells.

Malcomb,

Glad to be of help, it was not exactly 'to hand' but did not take much time to put together, had a good idea where to look. (bit sad that ;) )

It is worth mounting a scope correctly. If you lap the rings and use the same torques on the screw then removing the scope should not be a problem. I take a spare scope to competitons, already in set up in rings and have found less than 1/2" shift at 100yards if swapped out, good enough and sure beats going home!

Very good idea, Terry. I've always taken care over mounting bases & rings, and I'm finally going to start using regularised torque settings as well. I have a new scope to mount, as it happens - might fit it into spare rings**, following your own practice, so I too can swap scopes over...
Regards, Malcolm

**I need some rings! Current ones are "standard" steel rings (branded Tasco, Australia) that drop onto capstan-shaped stub protruding from flat steel base, about 2cm from top of base to central axis of ring, need a smidgeon higher... Any offers? Hope I will be forgiven this "wants" ad, repeating it in the proper section too...
