Need two scopes for new rifles... What scope?!

Postby turner.jc1 » Mon Sep 14, 2009 12:22 pm

I need two scopes for my new .17 HMR and .22-250, But can't decide for the life of me, so thought I'd seek some expert advise!

So far I've narrowed it down to these options for the .17:

Nikon Monarch 3 2.5-10x42- £287

Nikko Stirling Platinum Nite Eater 6-24x56 AG Illuminated 30mm- £169.95 (Quite fancy an IR)

Falcon Menace 4-18x56 Illuminated- £254.41

MTC Optics Viper 6-24x56 Illuminated SCB Reticule- £239.95

Bushnell Elite E3200 4-12x40- £269.95

And for the .22-250:

Bushnell Elite 6500 4.5-30x50 Mildot- £549.95

Nikon Monarch 3 8-32x50 ED- £534

Zeiss Diasport 2.5-10x42- £499

Meopta 2000 3-12x50- £575.99

Am leaning towards the Bushnell 6500 for the .22-250. Any advise or other options I should be considering please...

Josh,

I'd choose the 3200 for the 17 HMR, it has the best optics in your list by some margin. However, I'd have the 5-15x40 model as the additional mag is useful for the longer shots and it still gives a full 7mm pupil size for low light use.

You don't say how you want to use the .22-250 or what quarry you want to use it against.
I recently took the same choice for a .204 - this is used for everything up to fox size and I wanted to dial-in.
As it is a long range calibre (like the .22-250), I needed 1/8th clicks to dial-in (1" clicks at 400 yards is just too course) and this removed most of the competition. In the end I went for the Nikon 8-32x50 ED and it is serving me well. I did need to go for a 20 MOA base to mount it on as the adjustment is limited in a 1" tube.
However, the optics are very good (but perhaps not up to 6500 standards) and more importantly the clicks are totally accurate and reliable.
You are also given 3 types of turrets with the scope - low-ish profile with turret caps, high profile target type with caps and the ones I use - large exposed varminting / tactical style.

17HMR:
I know nothing of Falcon or MTC. Considering that this calibre has, for practical & sporting reasons, a limit of probably around 200 yards and generally less, 10X max magnification ought to be fine; Nikko is not in the same league as Nikon or the Bushnell Elites, and I personally wouldn't touch anything labelled Nikko; but either that Nikon or the B.Elite should work well, very good glass.
22-250:
Essentially one uses this calibre to push out the range a bit, to 300-500 yards, so fairly high max magnification seems a good idea. I'm happy with 18-20x; the Meopta and Zeiss you list are only medium magnification (though very good glass); so again, either the Nikon or the B.Elite would be a good choice IMO.

For the HMR, I'd go with the Nikon or Bushnell. The others simply aren't in the same class optically. I tend to like higher mags but that is a personal preference.

For the 22-250, it really depends what you're going to shoot, and at what range. I'd regard the Meopta and Zeiss as being optically slightly better than the Bushnell and the Nikon (Though I've only looked through 3200 and 4200 Bushnells myself, not the newer 6500, but do own Meopta, Zeiss and Nikon scopes). Again though, if this is a 300m+ vermin gun, I'd want more mag than 12x.

To give you examples, I have a Nikon Monarch 6-18x44 on my HMR, a Zeiss 6.5-20x50 on my .204R and a Nightforce 8-32x56 on the .243AI. My 7mm and 300WSM have a Meopta 3-12x50 and Leupold 4.5-14x50 on them respectively as they shoot bigger things, and typically at less range.
