H&N 8mm [.323] bullets

Postby john60wales » Tue Mar 10, 2015 9:14 pm

Folks!
I hope some kind person can help me with a reloading issue?
Anyway recently I was given a quantity of H&N bullet heads in .357 [180gn] & 8x57 [180gn]. I managed to find the load data for the .357...but am stuck with the 8x57 [mauser]. The reason is [as I've only just found out] is that the H&N bullets cannot be fired using full loads...they must use a reduced load.
On the H&N site they say that their bullets are not FMJ...instead they are copper covered [a lot thinner covering apparently] & they publish some load data...& for their 8x57's they suggest 15gns of Viht N110. Now I always thought that you shouldn't underload a cartridge?...& I use N140 in any case [no data available].
I don't really want the expense of buying yet another powder...as once these heads are gone I certainly wont be getting any more. So does anyone know if I can use a reduced load of N140 for these bullets [they should be classed the same as cast lead apparently]?
Thnks
John

I have tried some H&N bullets in .308.
I used Vit 110 and it was ok.
A similar powder such as H110 or Lilgun can be used if you want to scour the net for info.
Trailboss was recomended (by others ) for larger calibers due to its larger flake size filling the case, 7 gr if I remember for .308.
I would not recomend a reduced load of V140 as it is to slow a powder with much space left in the case for an erattic burn.
Lots of info on US sites.

Thanks for the info. I'd already managed to contact H&N themselves, & as you have already mentioned, they suggested N110 or Trailboss. They also mentioned that their High Speed bullets could not handle 'full' loads as they are likelly to break up..
cheers

this might be out of date and no longer relevant as you might have found good loads.
However I have just signed up and was trawling for H&N data when I found this.
Vit is very difficult to obtain and the American powders all but impossible. Vectan however is in goodly supply so I have been experimenting with that. I am still learning even after 38 years reloading everything from 12 gauge to 32 ACP.
Range last Friday ( 5th July ) produced the following with the H&N 323 190 gr in WW2 K98K iron sights shooting at 50 metres on outdoor range:

1. 17 gr SP3, H 1402, L 1296, Av 1338, 780 fpe, gp size 7/8" and 1 1/2" left of poa, 1 3/4 MOA;
2. 13 gr Nob 78, H 1446, L 1438, Av 1442, 905 fpe, g size 3/4" and 1 1/2" right of poa, 1 1/2 MOA;
3. 16 gr 2400, H 1325, L 1254, Av 1263, 694 fpe, g size 1" All but one in 1/2", 3" right and 2 1/2 " above

Did all the usual checks on primers, cases etc. Nob 78 and 2400 are all nearly at the end of the tub hence the playing around.
Also had very good results at 25 yards with 6 gr 6.4 of Ba10. just below the 475 fpe limit for indoors, and using 10.2 gr of Ba10 with the 196 S&B FMJ at 50 m.

Not bad for a K98 with reduced loads. :thup: :thup: :thup: :thup:

I should have said I also loaded a few rounds with Trailboss as per H&N suggestion. I checked the photos of the targets shot on 28th June. Nothing spectacular. 1 1/2 inches at 50. Strangely , there was a noticeable difference between those with a light factory crimp and those with none. Groups were so bad I didn't waste time chronographing them. Having thought about it since posting, I will load about some more groups of 5 rounds and try again when the range opens for full bore next week. There is enough TB in the bottom of the canister to get about 15/20 rounds. The point of the exercise is to get a softer load than 47g of TU5000 for use at 200yds at Bisley in the Imperial and Trafalgar meetings.

I never found the H&N bullets to be that good.

I bought 3 boxes of them for 45/70 and have used a handful, as stated it's not a jacket it's more like a copper wash coated in some type of resin.

Will not be buying any more
