Misfires

Postby melg4yng » Wed Mar 08, 2017 7:49 pm

After years of never having a problem I've had two misfires in two days. Same rifle, 270 Sako, but different batches of ammo. Loaded about six months apart. I'm wondering if the bolt is a light strike as if I cock the bolt manually out of the rifle , it is quite a lot easier than my .223 bolt. which is another Sako. I don't mean it's easy but it is definitely easier than the .223. Looks OK to me but anyone have a different opinion?

I think if the pin struck the primer any harder, it would perforate it!

That's what I thought, I did try it again after a few minutes but it still didn't work. It is the same powder and primers but I loaded them quite a few months apart. I've fired several hundred of identical loads in the past without problem so to get two within 30 rounds seems a little odd. Slightly compressed load but that wouldn't make any difference. Powder is kept in sealed containers in a wooden box (as per regulations!) and primers in a plastic box with sealed lid. Still grouping about 1/2 moa so no difference there. I'm now a bit puzzled. :?

Hi Mel

Do you wet tumble your cases? If so, do you make sure the cases are completely dry before priming?

Also, is there any possibility of oil contaminating the primer whilst been primed?

Also, are your primers fully seated? (it looks to me like that primer has been, but photos can be misleading)

That's a good strike. Assuming your stuff is kept dry, you haven't modified the primer pocket have you ?

I'm quite sure that nothing was damp or contaminated. I use the same primers in a .243 and never had any problem. The cases are only on their second loading as I recently bought a new supply and are standard, full length sized. I'll fire another 50 rounds or so and see if it repeats before thinking about any stalking.

Were the primers seated properly ,if not fully seated it can cause misfires .

As Born Again says, the strike looks very positive. However, I have had reason to pop some primed cases (bought some primed s/h Lapua, but did not know which primers they were) using a centre punch and even though the indentations were more positive than the one in your photo, some primers did not detonate. The reason was that the case were supported by the neck in some wood and therefore allowed the case to move slightly. This leads me to question the seating of your primers.

Alternatively: -

Could you have a faulty primer batch?

Could your head-space be incorrect on some cases?

Probably a duff primer, with the millions that get produced the odd one may not work.

I have lost count how many 22lr don't go bang.
