For "building a case" you really need the QuickDESIGN add on.

Hi Kev,

I know you're a busy man but if you could get round to doing that screen shot and some tips I'd
really appreciate it.

Many thanks

Kev, many thanks for doing that

Do you not take the balistic efficency into account when looking at the different powder charges?

I had previously been told to look for this as a good indicator, with anything over 30% being good.

I generally check for the following:

Amount of powder fill
Amount of powder burn
Velocity
Pressure

Cheers again,

Ross,

I never look at ballistic efficiency as it is an approximation at best. Even the manual mentions that it has errors due to individual case shapes.

How on earth are you getting efficiencies above 30% anyway? You must be running shotgun or pistol powder in a rifle case. Dangerous.... very, very dangerous!

Kev,

I'm not at home at the moment but a typical load for my .260 using Vit N140, Lapua 123g scenar bullets and a powder charge which is just under the pink, which gives 100% powder burn and velocity of around 2800 fps comfortably gives efficiencies over 30% - I'll put it on here later when I get home.

As far as I can see, all perfectly safe!

Ross,

That's quite possible.
However, unless you have heard something about ballistic efficiency in QuickLOAD that I've not, I'd advise against using it as a measure of the best powder.

OK, I'll put up a few recipes that I have been looking at later and ask your opinion of them!

Cheers for the information,

Evening Kev!

Here are a few loads that I have been looking at recently:

Load 1
.260 Remington
123g Lapua Scenar
26" Barrel
Max. case capacity 53.50 (SAAMI Spec - not got round to doing mine just yet)
37.8g Accurate 4064

This gives:
94% Fill
50603 psi
7497 psi muzzle pressure
100% burn
2809 fps velocity
32.2% efficiency

Load 2
.260 Remington
123g Lapua Scenar
26" Barrel
Max. case capacity 53.50 (SAAMI Spec - not got round to doing mine just yet)
36.5g Vit N135

This gives:
93.6% Fill
51035 psi
6862 psi muzzle pressure
100% burn
2765 fps velocity
33.3% efficiency

Load 3
.260 Remington
123g Lapua Scenar
26" Barrel
Max. case capacity 53.50 (SAAMI Spec - not got round to doing mine just yet)
38.5g Vit N140

This gives:
93.1% Fill
50344 psi
7406 psi muzzle pressure
99.99% burn
2776 fps velocity
30.7% efficiency

What do you think of the above loads? None seem to have high pressure, all have decent velocities and all have 100% powder burns. They also incidentally all have efficiences above 30%.

Thanks

Your own brass capacity makes such a huge difference that I just wouldn't bother with those calcs. It is quite likely that a good powder with that case capacity wont be so good with the correct numbers.
It is the old computer adage - rubbish in, rubbish out.

That said, I'd have a look at N560.

OK, I'll try and find time to weigh my cases tonight.

I'll let you know the difference!

Kev,

I have now put all of my personal data into quickload and I have been able to up the loads to the following (these loads are on the yellow/pink border):

Load 1
.260 Remington
123g Lapua Scenar
25.83" Barrel
Max. case capacity 55.80
39.1g Accurate 4064

This gives:
92.4% Fill
51034 psi
7798 psi muzzle pressure
100% burn
2809 fps velocity
31.7% efficiency

Load 2
.260 Remington
123g Lapua Scenar
25.83" Barrel
Max. case capacity 55.80
38.0g Vit N135

This gives:
92.6% Fill
52231 psi
7172 psi muzzle pressure
100% burn
2799 fps velocity
32.8% efficiency

Load 3
.260 Remington
123g Lapua Scenar
25.83" Barrel
Max. case capacity 55.80
40.1g Vit N140

This gives:
92.2% Fill
51421 psi
7728 psi muzzle pressure
100% burn
2813 fps velocity
30.3% efficiency

What do you think about these now? The only thing I will say is that they are all just below the 95% fill level - what significance would this have?

By the way, the same bullet etc. as above but using N560 gives the following:

.260 Remington
123g Lapua Scenar
25.83" Barrel
Max. case capacity 55.80
48.5g Vit N560

This gives:
104.9% Fill
50880 psi
10228 psi muzzle pressure
94.13% burn
2981 fps velocity
26% efficiency

Again, yellow/pink borderline.

Thanks
