What to get?

Postby TheSquire » Sun May 17, 2015 11:40 am

I am lookin to sale a few bits and buy a new shotgun. Something a bit different and maybe fun.
I've seen some nice pump action ones for sale but I also like the idea of a Greener.
Id like to use it for the odd clay, maybe some rough shooting and possibly in Cowboy Action rather than use my hammer gun.

Apart from general condition, barrel pitting etc. what should I look for in either of these that should be deal breakers?

Low budget, up to about £250.
Seen plenty in that price bracket but not sure what to look for as signs of abuse etc.

Try to get a good look at the metalwork in natural light if possible.

Depending on what type, dismantle into basic components, as a forend can hide issues.

Check barrel bore/s and for any dings in the rib/barrels.

Ask if you can test it before you buy - some friendly RFDs will let you if you are known to them, but probably not many

It's hard to beat a pump action for sheer fun value tbh. A mate had a GP Greener which had a novelty value, but I'd get bored of one very quickly.

I have a mossberg A500 select choke that I have had for 36 years it has never missed a beat a quick pull through with a bit of string with a patch attached is all it has ever needed.
Ideal for in a hide as the barrel is 24 inches long so it reduces the chances of getting tangled up in the netting.

Squire,

for about £170 more you can buy a Mossberg Maveric 88 they do look the biz with rifle sights and a 24 inch barrel.

You get a lot for your money with a Mossie.

Yeah... Mossberg 500 every time. I got one years ago and it came with a spare barrel. Mine is magnum chambered so it will actually take 3+1, if you were to load standard carts. Of course I'd never, ever, ever do that.. But it has a huge 'silly-grin-on-face' effect. Uncase one and everyone and his wife wants a go..
