Question I've been meaning to ask for ages...

Postby Tommo » Thu Aug 20, 2015 4:58 pm

How do you people out there clean your 12g / 20g shotgun mops?? Do you use a proprietary cleaner or do you soak in washing up liquid and rinse through..

Just wondering really as I've just found an old blister pack for one of the Bisley 12g mops and, I guess, Bisley presume everyone knows what to do as there is absolutely nothing written on the packet to guide people. That said, I think it's the same with a lot of shooting products..

I've never cleaned one

I'd imagine washing-up liquid with a splash of water would do the trick, though

I cleaned mine for the first time the other week dude to dirt contamination, (dropped in sand). I washed it out with break cleaner, it brought it back up like new

You would know these things grasshopper if you shot black powder musket. The only things that should be used to clean barrel is low surface tension solvent that will penertrate into the grain stucture of the metal surface.. The choice solvents is penertrating oil or just old fashion soap and water. If you clean the bore with hot soap and water, bore brush, and mop you'd be all set and not be bothered by these quandaries. Follow the cleaning by lightly oiling the barrels and you're done. Note that hot soap and water will remove salts accumulated on the barrels from handling with sweaty hands. I've use simple dish detergent and hot water to clean both modern and black powder guns and my mops are clean.

I cleaned four handguns and a rifle this evening. It wasn't a big deal

Yes but if you cleaned all of your guns every day you'd be cleaning guns 24 hours a day. :)
