Thomas Bland info request

Postby Rancid Badger » Tue Apr 27, 2010 5:24 pm

I've managed to buy a rather sorry looking SbS sidelock by "T Bland & Sons, 130 West Strand London", which I'm hoping to renovate.

I'm on the hunt for information regarding it's age / provenance etc & wondered if anyone was aware of any resources or knew about them (s/No: 15509)?

I did e.mail Woodcock Hill in the States (they bought out Thomas Bland in 1990), but they wanted more than the gun cost me to check their records, so I politely declined...

Anyway, any information that you may be able to pass on would be very much appreciated.

Probably Normanb might be able to point you in the right direction , you could check a few sights for other Thomas Bland guns for sale and compare serial numbers with yours if they have a year of manufacture for them , I know it wouldn't be very accurate but it would give you some idea .Is it in shootable condition ?.

Your Serial Number 15509 falls within the period 1900 -1918.

The 430 West Strand address was in use 1886 -1900 so that would date your gun nearer 1900. I notice you give 130 West Strand as the address so either you have picked that up wrongly or Nigel Brown's reference is wrong.

Blands were well known makers of punt guns and wildfowling guns.

As normanb says pics and proof marks would probably help a bit more

My hammer shotgun is by JG Stubbs, I think made around 1910. Any idea where I can find out more?

The name means nothing to me, is there an adress? It is more than likely that Stubbs was the retailer, a local ironmonger or such. I have seen numerous guns that were sold under the name of the shop as in those days ordered guns from Birmingham makers often bore the name of the seller as "maker".

Thanks for all of you help & assistance.

Unfortuntely the gun appear to be beyond saving. To resleeve the barrels (assuming that there's actually enough metal left to do so) approx £1500, new forend about £300 & thats before we start to look at the action!

So alas, I may just be handing it in to the police for them to dispose of, unless someone wants a real project?!

Sorry to hear that its had its day. By the by and dont get me wrong here but you said "resleeved" sorry mate but you can only resleeve a gun that has been sleeved previously .Yes I know picky picky picky, but I am actualy "resleeving "a pair of barrels at the moment due to some unfortunate accident.
Well thats my gripe for the night ,its a bank holliday weekend and I wont have to look at another gun till Teusday.

What proof marks are on the gun.. this will lead to more detail and avenues of investigation... Proof in Brum or Londinium?
