Remington 1100 woes! Help needed!

Postby Marccus » Sat Jul 26, 2014 5:49 pm

Hi all!
This is my first post so please be gentle!!
My trusty old Remington 12 gauge 3 shot shotgun has finally let me down after 20 years of ownership. The offending part I require is the magazine follower (plastic) that the
first initial cartridge pushes on to when loaded into the magazine?
Although I have not found out how this can be removed/fitted as it
stops at the 3 shot stop in the magazine.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Unfortunately not!
The follower travels down as far as the "crimp" in the tube and won't go past.
I am sure I could force it with it being plastic but am more concerned on how to fit the new one??

I have two 1100's and I never remove the plugs. A previous owner has on my 12 gauge and he munged the retainer a bit. Unfortunately the are two style of plugs retainers, one that can be simply turn 90 degrees and will come out and the other with a retainer clip that has where the retain clip has to be removed (pried out).

This is a generic overview of how to remove a gas cylinder plug,

Just to be complete I tore down my 1100 with the split steel retaining ring shell cylinder plug. The plug is just that, as shown below. The second photo shows the shell tube (cylinder) with the plug in place on the spring as well as the steel follower beneath the spring. The plug is a press fit and I removed it by pulling it out directly. I have a replaceable insert screw driver that has a step on the shaft. I inserted the screw driver shaft through the plug’s center hole and hooked the plug with the step and simply pulled out the plug. It comes out fairly easy. Now I need to put my shot gun back together.

Many thanks for the replies!
As you describe flintlock, I have removed the retainer, spring and plug and the broken part i need is
Still in the magazine, the plug sits on this. It is the plastic item that the first cartridge in the magazine pushes on to.

The part that you describe sounds like the follower which is the piece that contacts the shells in the magazine tube and pushes them towards the carrier. If that is stuck you should be able to tap it out. I'd would use one of my fiber glass ram rods that I have for my muzzle loading black powder guns to push it out. It's somewhat flexible. However I'm 2000 miles away. The follower comes out the end of the magazine (tube) towards the front end (muzzle end) of the magazine tube. It should just slide out. Is there a possibility that you've have a dent in your magazine tube or some other kind of constriction?

Once you free the follower I would replace it with this aftermarket follower: http://www.gggaz.com/remington-870-follower.html
It's made by GG&G and they don't make anything that's junk.

Hookay.........................

For the magazine tube dent to be raise order this 12 gauge tube dent remover tool from Brownells

http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools ... 25276.aspx

And this is how to use the dent remover

https://video.search.yahoo.com/video/pl ... ge=0&&tt=b

I would first clean the tube to remove all of the crude that may lock in the dent remover in the magazine tube. Then when using the dent remover I would remove the dent incrementally, just a little at a time and remove and relube the dent remover. Then do it again that way the dent remover doesn't get stuck in the tube.

Once you install the never to fail again GG&G follower you can crimp the tube again and make a bureaucrats happy.

Unfortunately the crimp has to be certified by the proof house!
Post Hungerford ( A rather dark epsiode in our history) all semi auto & pump action shotguns were restricted to two rounds in the magazine. This had to be a permanaet modification and certified by the Proof house with marks & certification.
I had my Mossberg 500 gelded in this manner and the police still ask to see the certificate!
The only other option was to consider the shotgun as a Section 1 firearm which is a whole new ball game!

Taking out the crimp could mean opening a big can of worms!
