00 buckshot (sg) help!

Postby thatguy » Sat Aug 16, 2014 5:57 pm

Hi guys I just bought some SG size cartridges (or 00 Buck) and I was just wondering if I can use them with any
choke, and with any gun. My gun is a hatsan escort pump with screw in chokes.

Thanks guys I don't want to damage the gun obviously!

Yes you can however it's not recommended in full choke gun. A modified choke seem to be optimal. A full choke tends to flatten the pellets more and your group will tend to open up more due to the deformation. It's not at all recommended for a extra full choked barrel. Double O is really an up close and personal load. There are only 12 pellets in a standard load and a result there tends to be missed areas in the pattern at any distance. It works well in the 25 yard range. It comes into it own as a police load or as a deer load in heavily brushy/wooded areas. During WWI US soldiers never cared for OO's on the open battle field and they were thought to be useless however they like them for in in close action during the trench raids. The OO's are popular in the southern area's of the US for deer hunting. In New England neatly everyone uses slugs. New England hunter's feel that it easier to gut shoot a deer with a stray pellet and taint the meat where that's not an issue with slugs.
The faster I go, the older I get.

You can shoot them with any choke without damage, however you should pattern the load yourself to see how each choke affect the spread.
Cylinder or improved cylinder choke seems best with buffalo 8 pellet SG.

this---^

with the proviso of do check the pattern.

I have some Federal 15 pellet shells, (53 grams) that pattern better through 3/4 choke and are very effective on driven boar out to 50 yards or so.
