Shotgun cleaning

Postby Deallad » Wed Sep 03, 2014 8:55 pm

After a recent chat with several guys from the clay club I found the most popular way they clean their shotguns was with a Hoppes Bore Snake. So being the type of guy that likes to try new things I bought one.

I have used bore snakes on rifles while in the field to remove the gunk that the rimfire rounds produce particularly my 17HMR so I was not new to them.

When I bought my shotgun I used the OTIS CLEANING SYSTEM as it come with brushes to clean from .17 to 12g shotgun it worked superb on all guns that I cleaned with it, leaving bores bright and clean.

Today I used the bore snake on my shotgun, but was not anywhere near as good as the Otis system so I cleaned the barrels with it, and the difference is amazing they now gleam.

My conclusion is the bore snake is ok when you can't be bothered to do a proper job and is a at best second rate way to clean a shot gun.

I only ever use bore snakes, and my bores are spotless. I have found the Beretta boresnake to be excellent.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281328357436? ... EBIDX%3AIT

It comprises a nylon brush, a bronze brush and a replaceable felt wad. The Baikals have chromed bores, and I have two IJ12 USSR era O/U's which still look as good as the day they came out of the factory. I had a Beretta SP at one time, and that only ever saw a boresnake too, and there wasn't a mark in the bores.

The secret is to use the boresnake before you put the shotgun back in its slip after every shooting session - that way, you should never have a problem. ;)

OMG how long does it take to clean a shotgun with a pull through? I used to give it 100 passes with a bronze brush and it would still not be clean (Beretta, using plastic wads, but plastic fouling was still there with fibre).

Now I put the rod in a drill and spin it up and down the barrel, works much better and obviously way faster.

I only clean the barrel probably every 1000 rounds or so, and I'm not sure why I bother then! it's an auto, so they are all up the same barrel too.

2 passes per bore. If there is any plastic in the bores, it usually comes out a lot easier when it is still warm.

Wow, like most people I have always found .22s need 20 or so shots down them to shoot consistently.

Cleaning immediately after shooting being much easier is a lesson I have had to learn a few times, I may have to start dragging a bore snake through the shotgun (I actually bought one I saw cheap, then realised I rarely clean anyway, so wondered why!).
I do at least boresnake the rifles after shooting, I lost an anschutz HMR barrel to pitting through not doing that. The shotgun though, I struggle to see what advantage cleaning the bore gives, it's not going to corrode if I don't, it's not going to shoot any better if I do.

I clean all of my guns after shooting. I just like them cleaned and lubed. The advantage to cleaning is shotgun is a polished bore. The pellets tend to drag on dirty bores with there's lead or plastic residue build up and add to the build up. Shooting with lead shot through a clean bore tends to polish the bore. Deposits just crud it up more and act as sites for further deposits. Whenever anybody buys a shot gun they always instinctively look for the bright shiny bore. Folks looking to buy a shotgun will accept some surface finish wear but they will pass on dull or pitted bore in a heart beat.
The faster I go, the older I get.

so are mine, always with a bore snake.
the barrels are lubed and the blueing wiped over with an oily rag.
they only get a good going over 3 or 4 times a year.
the HMR gets it every month

Last year I shot the first half of a clay shoot with a side by side using black powder. During the second half of the shoot the heavy fouling retreated up the barrels bit by bit as the nitro shells pushed it back, it was surprising to me how that worked, shiny bores half way, then solid black!

Obviously I always clean immediately and thoroughly after shooting black powder!

It is probably true that fouled bores foul more, but surely they have reached a steady state after 100 shells or so? As this is a days shooting, I still dont see the need to clean every time, they just get dirty again!

I have been using 'bore snake' type things since they came out.. years ago and, though there's no escaping the fact a proper rod and brush clean is the best way to go with either rifles or shotguns, it is my considered opinion that bore snake type cleaners are best used when your barrels are still warm. Works for me, every time.

I use a bore snake on my auto just to get the shite out but that's it. In fact I have been shooting a lot of clays lately and a fair few comps, I have put over 1500 + shells threw my Winchester SX3 in the last 3 month and thought the other night I'll give it a proper clean to remove the plastic fowling etc from the bore.

A couple of patches with 009 on it though the barrel and left to soak for 15 min, then the bronze brush on the end of a drill, a couple of passes up and down with the drill in full chat and it is now bling bling!

I'll probably do it again in another 1500+ rounds or if it gets wet in the mean time while out on the ducks and geese
