My Son wants me to go to the dark side i.e. ........

........ to acquire a shotgun!

Shotguns have NEVER excited me because of my opinion of the general crudeness of said guns. However, clay-birding now appeals to me.

My questions are: what is a s1 shotgun (I only have s1 FAC), and would a s1 shotgun be accepted at a clay-bird shoot?

If s1 shotguns are not "permitted" to clay-bird shoots, then I need to apply for a SGC?

Anyone who needs 200 pellets to hit what they're aiming at can't shoot straight.

I doubt you would get a Section 1 shotgun for clays, they are normally only issued to target shooters for practical shotgun and target shotgun.

If you want to shoot clays get a SGC.

There is a place and reason for every type of gun if I had to only have one gun it would be my mossberg A500 clect it can kill every type of animal in the world if the right type of cartridge stationary or on the move.

I have a small handful of shotguns that I rarely shoot. If I want to spray and pray I prefer to do it with and AR 15. Still,
shooting is shooting and if it goes bang then that's fine by me.

Many thanks to you all.

I should have applied for a SGC on my renewal (December 2015).

BTW, would turning up on a clay-bird shoot with tricked out SPAS 12 cause any frowns? I have this image of someone busting clays from the hip.

You could only use a S1 shotgun for clays if you had that condition stated on your FAC and the clay club permitted use of a S1 shotgun on their ground.

Nah, shotgun gun types in the US run all over the place from red necks shooting junk to snobs shooting high end guns. I've shot riot guns as well as double bores with only a rare comment where there's some numb nuts from an "alternate camp" who's just likes exercising his jaws. Sometimes they'll lighten up and feature as black powder smooth bore musket shoot. The trick with clays is to bust then no matter what you shoot. For straight trap matches the local range rules only allow one shell in the chamber at a time unless you are shooting double clays so the shell capacity of the gun doesn't mean very much. The cylinder bore spread shot to widely at distance so the trick to scoring with a cylinder bored gun is to nail the clays early out of the house. You have to be fast and accurate. My buddy with his 18 barreled Remington 870 riot gun is fast and he is accurate. I'm more of a lazy trap shooter and I prefer to take my time so I shoot late out of the house and therefore I prefer a tight choke on the bore. Still it's fun to see what you can and cannot do with a riot or a slug gun. I've shot a SPAS and it's a slow gun compared to a Benelli M1 Super 90. Still I love shooting trap with a double gun and really don't care so much about the score. My wife has a buddy, a woman named Arlene, who a retired elementary school teacher who shoots double clays and she nationally ranked by the trap association. When the fellow's with comment can best Arlene, they'll have my attention.

Like your style Cam, I am a rifle shooter but a lot of the guys from the club shoot shotguns,

After giving it a go a few times, I got the urge to apply for the shotgun cert. now I have 6 shotguns.
12g Baikal my first sg
12 Baikal side by side hammer gun (got it for £35 in good cond)
12g Beretta 692 used for clays
12g Franchi semi auto camo thing for pigeons
20g Bettinsoli (just had to have it) use it regularly
20g Lincoln, (will be the wife's gun when she gets her SGC

It's not that bad on the dark side, but get an O/U if you want it for clays, some clubs won't allow S1 guns to be used, you will have to show good reason for it too.

I only use the semi for rough shooting, (the camo is not a good look at the clay ground in my opinion) and swap between the Bettinsolli and Beretta for clays

Mike

There are some clubs that won't allow S1 shotguns to be used, but there are plenty of others that will.

I've treated myself to a 10-shot Benelli M2, my good reason is for pest control (pigeon/crow) but it's also conditioned for shooting clays, so no problem.
But, when shooting clays, I only load 2.

I turned up at my local clay ground (of which I am a member..) with my all black Mossberg 500 and 'it' got quite a few remarks, none of which were positive. One wag asked if I was going to make a quick withdrawal from either post office or bank on the way home..!! I smiled and politely informed him it was Sunday and they were closed.. :cheese:

Some clay shooters, and game shooters, can be a tad too anal with regards to what they consider to be the 'right and proper gun'. Mostly I think they are just arses with little or no idea what fun is.

"Clack, clack" says Mr Pump the shotgun... :die:  :shotgun:
