Cast on a shotgun stock

HI
Can someone please tell me how to tell a cast on a shotgun stock. I am told to look down upturned barrels and if the stock appears to bend to the right then that is a right cast. Or, conversely the left.
Is it that simple? :gunnana:

Yeah, it's that simple. I have flintlocks that have readily discernable cast. The purpose of the cast is to have the gun naturally point when you shoulder the firearm. With my flintlocks my eye naturally lines up in the sight without having to fight for a cheek weld on the stock.

Check the gun is empty

Stock on the floor, barrels pointed to your ugly mug (generic)

Turn the gun over so the forend is on the top and the barrels underneath and look down the gun

Simples

I have an engineer mate who was blinded in his right eye from a steel splinter. He still mounts his gun on the right shoulder but uses a crossover stock.

He certainly has no trouble checking his cast!!

All this turning the gun so fore end is uppermost is all very good, but that is just showing the cast at toe.
Even a stock that is mostly straight will usually show cast at toe, cast at face is seen easier with gun the right way up.
Better yet is seen accurately with gun in a rest and a straight edge placed along side the rib, that way the cast at face can actually be measure for comparison to another gun.
