Is a .22rf the same as a .22lr?

Pretty much anything shooting related

Is a .22rf the same as a .22lr?

Postby Judge Ali » Mon Nov 17, 2008 7:42 pm

Thought I would make this a new thread from my FAC one.

My ticket states .22rf which I understood just meant a normal .22 rimfire. But does this also cover a .22lr, .22 magnum etc. or do these need to be specifically listed. Is .22rf just a generic term for any .22 round?

Those with a .22lr - what does your ticket state?

Cheers
Alex

Alex...

Kind of yes......

.22rf means only .22LR. Any other type (ie .22WMR) should be stated on your ticket. .22 WMR is a different chamber.

Although anything you can get in your .22LR you can probably use... ie CB longs, .22lr subs .22lr hi-vel and .22lr hyper-vel.

Depending on which police area youre in, it might state teh kind of .22lr you can have also ie semi-auto or bolt.... fortunatley here in Lincs we are allowed either on a vacant slot.
Every day you wake up is a good day!

I would have thought that .22rf would allow either any of the .22 rimfire rifles to be bought to be bought.
Amongst others :
  • .22 Cap rounds, including BB Cap
  • .22 Short
  • .22 Long
  • .22 Long Rifle (.22 LR)
  • .22 Extra Long
  • .22 Winchester Rimfire (.22 WRF - AKA .22 Remington Special)
  • .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (.22 WMR)

According to my local RFD, my ticket for .22 rimfire will accomodate a .22WMR without a separate slot - though not really sure of the advantage of the WMR - longer range perhaps, but no doubt noisier?

.22RF simply means a .22 cal rimfire cartridge - of which there are several. It's often taken to mean .22LR, as it's the most common one and will chamber some of the others, but that isn't strictly accurate.

If a slot says .22RF and you requested .22RF and at no point asked for .22LR specifically, I can't see any issues with getting .22WMR.....but as to whether I would want one over a .22LR is a different matter. :)

ok, thanks for your posts. i thought a .22rf referred to a .22 short and hence thats why the others had their names to distinguish them. now i understand i have actually exactly what i requested here as well then and this does cover me for a .22lr as well. i thought it a little strange that i could have a .22 short but not a .22lr..............

anyway, i have been allowed everything i wanted - happy days! :)

your not wrong - talk about a flooded market! this will be for the range and then night time lamping but still not even 100% sure which rifle i am going to get yet. i pick up the .17hmr in a couple of days and then need to decide what to get next.

as soon as i have the rifle will start looking at ammo a little more closely - subsonic all the way i guess for night time lamping.

I've got a new Cz .22 rimfire and find that it likes Winchester X subs, i've tried CCi subs, but, very tight to chamber and not all are subsonic!I think other users have found the same, anyway best of luck with the ammo hunt (good excuse for popping off loads of rounds  )

Regarding ammo for the .22.

My son used Eley Hollow point Sub Sonic in his CZ and that would group to 1" at 100 yards off the bench.

Going more up market the same ammo would group to an inch at 100 yards in a 10/22 with a Volquartsen Carbon Fibre Barrel.

I've used this ammo in my Sako Finn Fire with good results but I haven't measured the group size.

Most of the shooters at the club (Derby) use what was Lapua Club for gallery rifle small bore. It comes in tubs of 500, has some lubrication but not so much that it gums up the action of a semi auto. I've used it in a 10/22 and my Thompson Benchmark. This ammo will now be labled with a different brand name in future. As it's used at 50 yards or less pin point accuracy isn'r needed but it works well in the rifles, is accurate enough for the x ring and it's not overly expensive.

The best results in the Thompson and the Sako were with Lapua Midas but it's twice the price of the Standard.

I have an Anschutz Match rifle for bench rest and the best results are with Eley Ten X but at £186 per 1000 it's not for the odd plinking session.

The worst results I've had with any of my rifles was with RWS ammo but that's not to say it won't work well in other rifles, it just doesn't suit mine.

Try your rifle with a variety of makes of ammo and chose one that performs to what you need and is affordable.
