rimfire misfire procedure

Postby calicopicker » Sun Feb 14, 2010 7:41 pm

im curious to know what other clubs do for the rimfire misfire precedure.
because for .22 it seems to be a sort of grey area. some ppl say eject the round after 30 seconds and turn it around and try again. some say hand it to the rco for disposal. altho not a powerful as a full bore round..it would still do alot of damage if it was semi contained and went off.
anyone got any thoughts on the matter?

If you were shooting a practical discipline against the clock whatever the stoppage you would clear it as quickly as possible , ejecting onto the floor , and carry on . seen it done hundreds of times , never seen one go off when it wasnt supposed to .
Often seen FTF in a semi but tried them in a BA and they fire OK , not always but more often than not .
I know when shooting FB wait 30 seconds before ejecting and poke them in the ground and dont forget to take them with you at the end of the shoot .

I always carry a leatherman tool in my field kit. If I have a miss fire 22 and after waiting a minute or so and safely ejecting it I usually pull the projectile. I hold the shell in my finger and wobble the head with my pliers. Once the head loosens enough I'll pull it form the shell and empty the powder on the ground.

When my brother and I were very young we found a spent a spent 22 and tried to take apart with a rock. I came apart and my brother got a 22 bullet stuck just under the flesh in his lower abdomen. I don't leave stuff like that laying around for the next rock foolish kids to play with.

By the way, very nice Deering Calico.

I get a few misfires with the GSG because it has a very light strike, I just eject it and carry on. I then load it back into the gun having turned it so another part of the rim shows to the hammer and try again. That usually does the trick.
For the avoidance of doubt, there is no such thing as "American English". There is the English language and there are mistakes.

not sure biting the lead bullet off would be a good practice

i agree the head should be taken off. not sure i want to be stood next to you when you do it though.
in american clubs ive read they have a dud bin. a container on the range that misfires are put into for the rco or armourer to dispose of ..unfortunately i could see the scenario of a person lookin in there and taking some out to use. and its just another job that someone has to do.
i cant even find reference to smallbore misfire at nra ranges on theyre website.

any further ideas?

Never yet had a fullbore that didn't go bang, but the occasional rimmie just gets rotated and straight back in, then fired even if the target has scarpered. I don't like the idea of leaving a live round for kids to possibly find.

Ive only had a couple missfire, kept the gun pointing down range, magazine out and unload... popped it back in the mag and tried again, went bang. Had one that didn't load right and bent the brass, had my SOG (prefer it to leatherman ;) ) and popped the lead off and emptied the powder in the bin

I don't think you should really empty the powder into the bin. It's better to empty it into an ashtray.

Then watch the expression on the face of the next smoker who puts his ciggie in the ashtray ,

I take them home and pull thim and put the powder in the plant pots as nitrate is a good fertiliser .
